Belles Ready for St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will look to get off to its best start since the 2006-07 season at the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic in San Antonio on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27-28.

The Belles (2-0) will face Missouri S&T on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Arkansas Monticello on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.  The last time ASU went 4-0 to start a season was the 2006-07 season under head coach Sally Walling Brooks. The two wins would tie head coach Kevin Baker with Brooks for the best start to a season in their first year coaching at Angelo State. 

ASU is averaging 96.5 points per game which leads the LSC and is No. 2 in Division II currently. The first half of games has been key to the Belles quick start. ASU is outscoring teams 116-53 in the first two quarters alone. Opponents have been held to 57.0 point per game. Angelo State is also top 25 nationally including No. 7 in assists (21.5), No. 11 in field goal percentage (49.3), No. 24 field goal percentage defense (32.0), No. 10 in offensive rebounds per game (20), No. 10 rebound margin (15.0),No. 2 in scoring margin (39.5) and No. 25 in steals (12.5).

Taylor Dorsey, the LSC Offensive Player of the Year, has led the Belles on offense with 24.5 points per game. The scoring average is the second best in Division II nationally. She scored a season high 27 points in the season opening win versus Arlington Baptist and followed it up with 22 against Western New Mexico. She is hitting above 50-percent from the floor (56.3), three pointers (53.8) and free throws (60.0). Dorsey also has a team high 7.5 rebounds per game while dishing out 2.5 steals per game.

Diamalises Rivera is second on the team in scoring with 11.0 points coming off the bench. The senior is third on the team in rebounds (7.0). The Puerto Rico native has sunk 47.1-percent from the floor and 85.7-percent from the charity stripe. Rivera and Dorsey are the only two Belles to score in double figures in the first two games of the season.

Jasmine Prophet and Brea Mitchell are both averaging 10.0 points per game. Mitchell has scored 12 and 8 points in the first two games while Prophet has games of four and 16 points. Prophet is shooting .600 from the field and Mitchell has a .545 clip.

Christina Robinson and Lexi Murphy have scored 7.5 points per game this season. Robinson has hit six field goals and two three pointers this season. The junior also has four assists and three steals. Murphy has a season high of nine versus Western New Mexico. She was a perfect two-for-two from behind the arc in the game.

KeAnna Kelly is tops in the nation in assist to turnover ratio. The sophomore is currently No. 4 nationally in the category with 7.0. She has seven assists on the season and has averaged 7.0 points per game.

Kiahna Thompson, Lou Hakwins, Nekeita Bailey, Natalie Quesnel, Alle Briitain, Danielle Patillo and Fabrianna Dixon have all received time off the bench. Thompson scored a season high 10 points in the opener against Arlington Baptist. Hawkins has scored eight points on the season and dished out two assists. Bailey is averaging 19.0 minutes per game with six assists, five steals and one block. Quesnel has scored 3.0 points per game and grabbed 2.0 rebounds. Brittain, Patillo and Dixon all have averaged 1.0 points per game through two games this season.

Missouri S&T will be the first opponent for the Belles. The Miners are 2-1 on the season and average 66.7 points per game. MST has limited teams to 49.3 points and forces 23.3 turnovers per game. Raetchel Gray leads the team with 11.0 points per game.

Saturday's opponent will be Arkansas Monticello who is 1-1 on the year. UAM is led by Jordan Goforth and Nelsha Peterson in scoring. Goforth has scored 19.5 points per game while Peterson is scoring 17.0 per game.

The games will be carried locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
