COMMERCE – The Angelo State soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit, but a Jade Bell goal in the 68th minute proved to be the game-winner as Texas A&M-Commerce claimed the Lone Star Conference Championship with a 3-2 win over the Rambelles on Sunday at the Lions Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (15-4-1) will now wait until 6 p.m. on Monday to learn of its NCAA Division II regional fate when the tournament selection show announces the at-large bids and seeding for the South Central Championships. The Lions (15-5-0) earned the LSC's automatic qualifier with the win and claimed their third LSC tournament in program history.
"I thought the effort was good and that our girls played a great game," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "We fought hard to get the game back even, but unfortunately we got screened off in goal and they were able to get their third goal. Those things happen, but the effort was really good."
Down two goals after the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an ASU own-goal which deflected off a Rambelle and a Madison Cordts goal in the 34 minute, the Rambelles got the on the scoreboard with a 38th minute goal by
Brianne Brown off a cross from
Sierra Anderson to cut the deficit to one. Brown's goal was her third of the season and Anderson's assist was her first. The game went to halftime with the Lions leading 2-1 with the Rambelles leading 9-8 on shot attempts and
Selena Alvarez would tie the game at 2-2 with a 67 minute unassisted goal. Alvarez, who now has three goals this season, went upper shelf against the Lions goalkeeper for the goal.
Knotted at two each, Bell scored the game-winner just 64 seconds after Alvarez had scored her goal. Bell was named the LSC Championship's MVP, while Anderson,
Haley Mendel and
Caitlyn Conaway were named to the all-tournament team for the Rambelles.
"We played really good soccer, but there were too many errors on defense that we needed to clean up," Conaway said. "I'm really proud of the team and am looking forward to next week."
Angelo State finished the game with a 16-13 shot advantage with both teams finishing with eight shots on goal. Anderson, who had a hat trick with three goals against ENMU in the semifinals on Friday, led the Rambelles with six shots on Sunday and
Tiffany Dang added three more. Brown finished the game with two shots, including ASU's first goal.
Shantel Wittke finished the game with five saves in 90 minutes of play and now has 71 saves this season.
