Dear Parents & Student Athletes:
Enclosed please find information relating to the medical policies/procedures at Angelo State University (ASU). The purpose of this letter is to briefly outline the policies and procedures for the student-athlete.
ASU athletic insurance coverage is an excess or secondary carrier. The insurance policy of the parent(s)/guardian(s) will be utilized in the event of an injury while the student-athlete is participating in practice or competition. At NO TIME will the parent have to pay for injuries received by their son/daughter during practice or competition. ASU will be responsible for any portion not covered by your personal insurance, including deductible. You want to be certain your son/daughter still qualifies for coverage under your family insurance policy. Our insurance carrier requires verification of insurance on any claim filed. If your son/daughter is not covered by an insurance plan, you should consider paying for insurance that is available for all students at ASU. You will find information about coverage available to your son/daughter that will cover them while in school or away from school at
http://angelo.myahpcare.com.
The athletic department at ASU carries medical insurance for student-athletes as stated above. Angelo State University has a contract with Shannon Health System for all medical services unless they deem that they cannot perform the procedure. This insurance covers any injuries that occur in connection with a student-athlete’s participation in a supervised, sponsored activity. ASU will only pay for services provided at Shannon Health System unless the injury occurs at an out of town scheduled ASU athletic event. It is important to understand that according to NCAA rules, ASU cannot pay for medical conditions that arise from anything other than the student-athlete’s participation in a practice or competition including general medical conditions. For example, ASU will not pay for any medical expense for injuries or illnesses occurring in recreational, intramural activities, or any other activity noted within the medical policies. Please note that ASU does NOT pay for physical therapy/rehabilitation expenses other than with Shannon Medical Center. You should review your insurance policy to familiarize yourself with your insurance’s payment of those costs.
The ASU team physicians perform pre-season physicals when a student-athlete arrives for pre-season practices. All student-athletes must complete a yearly physical. Incoming freshman or junior college transfers should be aware that ASU cannot pay for preexisting injuries that did not occur at ASU. If our team physician detects a pre-existing injury (i.e. torn ligament, fracture, hernia, etc.) any financial payment incurred post physical exam will be the responsibility of the parent/student athlete (i.e. X-ray, hospital, physician, office visit, etc.).
The drug testing policy covers the student-athlete’s participation in athletics at ASU regardless of any financial assistance. This policy is mandatory for each sport. At NO TIME will any student-athlete be allowed to participate without signing the consent form for NCAA and ASU. Enclosed you will find a list of banned substances by the NCAA. Your son/daughter is responsible for reviewing these classes of drugs.
Sincerely,
Troy Hill MS, LAT, ATC
