STEPHENVILLE – The Angelo State women's basketball team lost 67-63 to Southern Arkansas on the final day of the Tarleton State Invitational at Wisdom Gym.
The Belles (0-2) were hampered by 28 turnovers including 16 in the first half turnovers. Southern Arkansas (1-1) received 38 points from its bench and hit seven 3-pointers compared to just one for the Belles. ASU was able to hit 39.4-percent from the field compared to just 34.8-percent for Southern Arkansas.
"We can't continue to have 28 turnovers and except to be successful," ASU head coach
Cayla Petree said. "Southern Arkansas did a good job of crashing the offensive boards. We have to get in the gym and work on our shots but I was proud of the way we competed. We are looking forward to Tuesday night and playing in front of our home fans."
ASU had three players score in double figures led by
Jasmine Caston's 16 points.
Jasmine Caston recorded her first double-double of her ASU career with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Jackie Patterson added 15 points and six rebounds.
The two teams were tied at 10 at the 13:58 mark in the first half. Southern Arkansas hit back-to-back threes and went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-10 advantage.
The trio of Caston,
Jasmine Patterson and
Jackie Patterson would score the next 12 points for ASU. A layup by
Jasmine Patterson tied the game at 24. Southern Arkansas would hit a 3-pointer and outscore ASU 9-6 to take a 33-30 lead in at the break.
Jackie Patterson led ASU with 10 points at the half while Caston scored eight points.
The Belles had a good start to the second half with a 7-2 run to take a 37-35 lead.
Shauna Coleman started the scoring with a layup and
Amanda Weaver hit ASU's only 3-pointer at the 17:44 mark of the second half.
Weaver hit a free throw to put ASU up 44-42 but Southern Arkansas hit back-to-back 3-pointers again to regain the lead at 48-44.
The Belles found themselves down 56-49 until a quick 5-1 run with
Jasmine Patterson scoring three points on a bucket and a free throw made it 57-54. Two free throws by
Michelle Rosewell at the 4:34 mark would cut the deficit to 57-56.
Southern Arkansas would score five unanswered points over the next three minutes to push its advantage to 62-56. The Muleriders would hit a three pointer and five free throws down the stretch to prevent the ASU comeback.
Chanel Miller and Rosa Bryant led SAU with 12 points each. A total of 12 Muleriders would score during the game.
The Belles will play in their season opener on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against UT-Permian Basin at Stephens Arena inside the Junell Center.Â
