Belles suffer sweep in regular-season finale

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team was swept inside the Junell Center for the first time since the 2010 season after Lubbock Christian earned a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-22) win over the Belles on Saturday in ASU's regular-season finale.

The Belles (19-7) moved to 8-2 in non-conference play and to 11-3 at home this season with the loss, while the Chaps improved to 18-5 with the win. ASU, which was coming off a thrilling five-set win over Tarleton State on Friday, couldn't carry that momentum over into Saturday's match and reverted offensively by committing 25 errors and hitting .088 as a team against LCU.

Brianna Sotello recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a team-high 14 kills and added 17 digs, while senior Shelby Wilt provided 24 digs in the final home match of her career. Katie MacLeay added 15 digs, while Zoey Hanrahan provided six kills and Abbie Lynn had five kills.

LCU out-blocked the Belles 5-2 in the match and limited its errors to 18. Maddie Johnson led the Chaps with 12 kills, while Abby White provided eight kills and eight digs and Christa Daniel led the team with 23 digs. ASU was last swept at home by West Texas A&M on Nov. 16, 2010. The Belles are now 10-2 in three-set matches with their only other sweep this season coming against Tarleton State on the road.

The Belles will open the Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championships with a noon match on Thursday against Eastern New Mexico in Canyon.
