Angelo State Sweeps Cameron on the Road

LAWTON, Oklahoma – Angelo State volleyball produces its 17th sweep (25-16, 25-15, 25-16) of the 2015 season with a victory over Cameron on the road Friday evening.

ASU rose to 27-5 overall and 13-2 in the Lone Star Conference with Friday's sweep of the Aggies. This improved the Belles win streak to eight and has moved them to 11-3 on the road. Cameron slid to 16-8 on the year and 7-8 in the LSC with the home loss.

"It was a quality win tonight against a talented opponent," said ASU volleyball head coach Chuck Waddington. "We served tough enough to keep [Cameron] off balance and that made defense a little bit easier on our side. Our dig to kill ratio was pretty high. Katie [MacLeay] defended a lot of balls and Maggi Jo [Keffury] stepped in and set a ton of great balls to our pin hitters. We played pretty efficiently."

Mallory Blauser headed the Belles attack with a team high 18 kills and .536 clip against the Aggies. This was her fifth consecutive match dropping in double-digit kill figures and her fifth match this season marking over a .400 clip.  The outside hitter has now climbed to second in the LSC with a 4.18 kills per set average.

Brianna Sotello was second on the squad with 10 kills tonight, which allowed her to retain her top spot on the squad with 416 kills this year. The sophomore also contributed a service ace and seven digs. Rounding out the attack, Mallory Davidson took charge from the service line firing 3 service aces over the net. She also contributed six digs on defense.

Setter Maggi Jo Keffury allocated the ball 40 times this match adding to her LSC leading 1363 total for 2015. This is only 103 assist away from sixth all-time in the ASU total assist category and has had only one sub 30 assist match this season. The senior added a team second 16 digs on defense accomplishing her 14th double-double of the year.

Katie MacLeay, Morgan Seaton and Micheala Sifuentes anchored the Angelo State defense in the sweep. Macleay led the team with 17 digs while also contributing a service ace. She not only continues to lead the team with 23 service aces, but the libero also leads the team and the conference with 607 total digs and a 5.28 digs per set average.

Morgan Seaton has recently taken over the lead spot with the most blocks on the squad and added five more to her 67 block total. The transfer also added a team third eight kills. Sifuentes completes the defensive leaders tallying a squad third 8 digs on the night.

In the first set, with the Belles down 3-6, a Seaton kill jump started a 7-1 run that give the Belles the lead. Though Cameron tried to climb back into the leader's position a kill from MacLeay that was served up by Sifuentes thwarted a two point Aggie run attempt. With a seven point, 21-14, lead Taylor Lee Seaton and Sotello each lined up a pair of kills that would give the Belles the 25-16 set victory.

ASU manufactured a 9-2 run to begin the second set, which saw Abbie Lynn contribute a kill and a block assist. With a 15-9 lead and the Aggies committing a pair of attack errors, Lynn and Morgan Seaton would continue to contribute with another key block during another lengthy 11-5 run that would leave ASU needing one point at 24-13 to put the set away. After three consecutive Cameron points, Sotello would answer the call and close the set out, 25-15, with a finishing kill shot. This took ASU into the break ahead 2-0 in the match.

Coming out of intermission MacLeay set the tone with an aces right out of gate. The two squads would trade points until, with the score 8-7, Sotello, Blauser and Taylor Lee Seaton would tally consecutive points for ASU giving them a 13-8 lead. After Cameron scored its last point of the match to make it 22-16, Blauser and Morgan Seaton would take the Belles down the home stretch sharing a block and each dropping in a kill. With the 25-16 third set victory Angelo State would complete the sweep and being looking forward to their last regular season match-up

ASU will close out its 2015 regular season on Saturday, November 14 at 2 p.m. against Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas.
