SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rams basketball team will continue its home stand this weekend taking on Schreiner University on Friday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. and St. Edward's University on Saturday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. as they host the Ed Messbarger Classic .
In its second year, the Ed Messbarger Classic is named in honor of the legendary ASU men's basketball coach that won 630 games in his 41 year career and 267 games with the Rams. The two time LSC coach of the year also led the program to two Lone Star Conference titles. As the head coach of St. Mary's in San Antonio he was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year (1974-75). Messbarger was inducted into the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor in 2006 and into the Angelo State Hall of Honor in 2012. He retired from coaching at the age of 65 in 1998 having spent nearly half of his illustrious coaching career, 20 years, as the head coach of the Rams. The Angelo State Hall of Honoree and legendary men's basketball coach passed away on June 30, 2014 at the age of 81.
Winning its home opener by the fourth largest margin (70) and scoring the sixth most regulation points (116)Â in ASU men's basketball history, the Rams have improved to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center under head coach Cinco Boone. Looking to rebound from a loss in its home opener, Schreiner is currently sitting at 0-1 on the season. St. Edward's is currently 3-0 on the year and will be seeking to extend its three game win streak. Â Â
"We are going to be playing two really good opponents this weekend, " said ASU Head Basketball Coach Cinco Boone. "Both teams are well coached and we will be looking for the preparation that we have put in on these teams this week to carry over and execute on our scouting report. We will hopefully play hard in front of the home crowd and earn a couple of wins."
The Rams offensive attack which is led by Shelton Boykin, Stedman Allen and Tre Bennett currently leads the LSC with the most overall points scored (297). Boykin has accrued a conference leading 64 points averaging him 21.3 per game and is currently shooting .667 from the field. The junior guard scored a career second 22 point in the Rams home opener against Arlington Baptist and has posted at least 20 points in the past two games.
Steadman follows with a team second 49 total points and has improved to hovering in the double digit range since only scoring six in the season opener. He is .576 from the field with a 16.3 point per game average. Defensively, he leads the team with seven steals.
Completing the main offensive contributors, Bennett is the team leader in assist and in shots made from the foul line. The point guard has drained 17 of 18 from the line for an outstanding .944 percent. He played a major role in the Rams 34 assists home opener and has a total of 14 assists to date. The senior has also tallied 46 total points on the year and is averaging 15 points per game.
Senior Omari Gudul has been a defensive specialist for ASU. As the main rebounder for the Rams he leads with 28 total rebounds on the season, 18 of which are defensive. He also leads the squad with eight blocks. He has assisted the Angelo State offense with26 points and nine assist thus far.
Picking up his first start of the year in the Rams home opener, Prince Foster knocked down 11 points and was one of the team leaders with seven total assists. The guard out of Miami, Florida also produced three key steal s against Arlington Baptist. He has a .588 shooting percentage from the field and is .750 from the foul line.
Coming off the bench and providing solid play for ASU has been Quay King and Thomas Tshikaya. King has made nine 3-pointers in three games, which leads the Rams. This has earned him third place on the team with an average of 15.5 points per game. Tshikaya has a team second 17 rebounds and earned his first double-double of the season in the Rams last outing with 12 total boards and 11 points. Â Â
