SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team outscored McMurry 35-13 in the second quarter to roll to a 107-66 win on Thursday, Jan. 31 at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
The Belles (7-3) scored at least 100 points for the second straight season and forced a season high 28 turnovers. McMurry (2-9) were outrebounded 49-35 in the loss. ASU dominated in the paint 62-38 and scored 42 points off the 28 turnovers. Angelo State also committed a season low nine turnovers.
"After playing poorly for two straight games the message was that we needed a game today and the only thing we talked about this week was playing at a higher level," ASU head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "The fact that we played today was important and the fact that we played well was important."
Diamalises Rivera led ASU with a career high 25 points on 10-for-14 form the field. The senior also grabbed a team high eight rebounds. Four other Belles scored in double figures. Taylor Dorsey added 16 points and six assists while Christina Robinson scored 13. KeAnna Kelly and Fabrianna Dixon contributed 10 points. The 10 points for Dixon is a career high.
The first quarter went back and forth between the two teams. The Belles took a 7-2 lead on a layup by Robinson and extended it to 11-5 on a pair of free throws by Rivera. The War Hawks battled back to tie the game at 11 with a 7-0 run. A three pointer moments later put McMurry up 18-16 until a quit 5-0 run in the final 1:42 capped off with a layup form Dorsey.
The second quarter was all ASU. The Belles were up 19-18 and a layup by Robinson sparked a 21-2 run. Kiahna Thompson drained a three pointer to end the run and give ASU a 40-20 advantage with 4:32 to go in the second quarter. McMurry was outscored 13-9 over the final four minutes of the second quarter and Angelo State took a 53-29 lead in at the break.
Kelly opened up the second half with a three at the top of the key. Robinson hit a three pointer at the 8:22 mark to extend the lead to 59-31. The Belles pushed the lead to 30 at 73-43 on a jumper by Natalie Quesnel at the 2:23 in the third quarter. The teams each scored four points each in the final 2:23 as ASU took a 77-47 lead in the fourth.
A 14-5 run to open the fourth gave ASU its biggest lead of the game at 91-52. Rivera scored 11 of her career high 25 points in the fourth quarter. A jumper by Alle Brittain pushed ASU over the century mark for the second time. Dixon hit the final jumper of the game to end it at 107-66. The 107 points is the third most in a single game in school history.
Sierra Maykus and Taylor Russell led McMurry with 15 points a piece. Russel also grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Belles will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in Stephenville to open up Lone Star Conference play with Tarleton State.
