AUSTIN, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season after dominating St. Edward's 85-50 in Austin.
It is the first time the Belles have been 5-1 to start the season since 2006-07. ASU shot a season high 64.2-percent from the floor and dominated in the paint 48-20. ASU also received 38 points from its bench. St. Edward's falls to 2-5 on the year after scoring only single digits in the second and third quarter. The Belles had another outstanding defensive effort holding the Hilltoppers to 32.8-percent and zero St. Edward's players scored more than seven points. ASU outrebounded SEU 35-28 and scored 18 points off 15 Hilltopper turnovers. The win is also the first true road win for ASU.
"I am really proud of the way we played today," ASU head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "We played aggressively on defense and really shot the ball well. It was a total team effort. Winning on the road is difficult and we had the right mentality today."
A total of 12 players scored on the day. Taylor Dorsey led the way with 24 points. It is her fourth game in double figures and the third with at least 20 points. Lexi Murphy added 10 points and three assists. Jasmine Prophet chipped in nine while Brea Mitchell scored eight points. The Belles were efficient from behind the arc hitting 80-percent (8-of-10). Mitchell Dorsey and Murphy all hit two three pointers.
The Belles built a quick 9-6 and Dorsey extended it to six with a 3-pointer. The shot sparked a 15-6 run highlighted by a 3-pointer from Mitchell with 1:36 to go up 24-12.
The second quarter was all ASU limiting SEU to just nine points. The Belles opened the second quarter on a 13-5 run spurred by back-to-back layups off turnovers from Prophet and Kiahna Thompson to extend the lead to 37-17. Another 3-pointer from Murphy followed by layup by Natalie Quesnel made it 42-21 at halftime.
St. Edward's only shot 29.0-percent from the field in the first half while the Belles hit 62.1-percent from the field and a perfect five-of-five from behind the arc.
The third quarter was similar to the second quarter as the Belles held St. Edward's to eight points in the quarter. Two free throws by Dorsey opened up a 15-4 run. Dorsey scored 11 of the 15 points during the run to extend the lead to 57-20 with 4:06 to go in the quarter. ASU closed the quarter with 11 straight points for a 68-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter. St. Edward's was able to outscore Angelo State 21-17 to make the final 85-50.
The Belles will return home for their next matchup against St. Mary's on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. in Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
