No. 17 Rams fall 5-2 in series finale to Greyhounds

PORTALES, N.M. – The No. 17-ranked Angelo State Rams dropped their second straight Lone Star Conference series after falling 5-2 in the series finale against Eastern New Mexico on Sunday and taking a 3-1 series loss at Greyhound Field.

The Rams (20-10, 10-9 LSC) scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning on a J.C. Snyder two-out double to right-center field but were unable to score again. ENMU (8-18, 5-11 LSC) tied the game at two with a run in the first and third inning before taking a 4-2 lead in the fourth when Dylan Nault hit a two-run single for the go-ahead runs. The Greyhounds, who earned their first conference series win of the season, took the series opener 5-4 on Friday and the final two games of the series after ASU secured a 4-2 win in the second game of the series on Saturday.

Angelo State returns to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday with a non-conference game against St. Mary's at Foster Field before travelling to Lawton next weekend to play Cameron in a three-game series which will start the second half of conference play. ASU, which also dropped three of four last weekend at Texas A&M-Kingsville, is now 5-8 on the road this season.

Cameron Massengill led the Rams at the plate, going 3-for-3 and taking a walk to reach base all four times he went to bat. Massengill and Paxton DeLaGarza scored the Ram runs with DeLaGarza scoring after reaching on a first-inning double center field. Snyder finished the game 2-for-4, including his conference-leading 15th double of the season.

Kellen Rholl (0-1) took the loss despite his strongest start of the season where he recorded a career-high six strikeouts and scattered five hits in five innings of work for the Rams in the series finale. The freshman left-hander allowed four runs in a game where the Rams committed only one error and he walked only two in his third start of the season. Trae Davis recorded two strikeouts in one inning of relief, while Graylon Brown had three strikeouts as he closed out the game with two innings of scoreless relief.

Zach Shank 1-1) earned the win for ENMU with five innings of relief of starter Clyde Kendrick. Shank scattered four hits and allowed only no runs after Kendrick had four strikeouts and allowed two earned runs in a four-inning start. Nault led the Greyhounds with his two RBI and went 2-for-4, while Justin Paul and Chad Highberger had two hits each.

The Greyhounds play a midweek game at Lubbock Christian on Tuesday before travelling to Stephenville to start their second half of conference play next weekend.
