Belles Continue Undefeated Conference Run with Sweep of Lady Buffs.

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State volleyball team (15-3, 4-0) swept West Texas A&M (4-8, 0-4) to remain undefeated at home and in conference play on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Belles sweep (25-14, 25-19, 25-18) of the Lady Buffs marks the first time this feet has been accomplished in the past 22 years. The last time ASU entered a performance like this in the books was under Head Coach Kathleen Brasfield in 1993.

"There was a lot of good, and it's always good to beat a rival," Head Coach Chuck Waddington said of Saturday's win. "We played at a high level pretty consistently and for the whole time we were out there. It doesn't matter what the records are or who is winning what, a match like that always has a lot of emotion attached to it."

Three Belles powered the Angelo State offense with double figure kills. Mallory Blauser continued to lead the way with 13 kills and two service aces. The junior now has 241 kills on the year with a .253 hitting percentage.

Brianna Sotello chalked up 10 kills of her own, bringing her season total to 218. She also distributed the ball 3 times and added 12 digs to aid the defense. Abbie Lynn rounded out the group with 10 kills of her own and 2 blocks and held the WTAMU attack to a .094 clip for the match.

Senior Maggi Jo Keffury capped off the night with 37 assists and a .500 hitting percentage, which tied her season high. Conference leader Katie MacLeay would finish the night 23 digs brining her season total to 366.

ASU began the first set with a kill by junior Alyssa Orr that would set the Belles on an 8-1 run. The two teams would continue to trade small runs until two consecutive kills were dished out by Zoey Hanrahan and Sotello to give the ASU the 1-0 lead. The Belles defense led by Katie MacLeay held WTAMU to their lowest hitting percentage of the match (.045)

Angelo State and West Texas traded points in the second set, until Sotello fired a kill that would set up a 6-0 run.  The Belles would not look back and kept the Lady Buffs from regaining the lead. Blauser would add a set ending kill of her own to take the team into intermission with a 2-0 lead.

The Belles would come out of the break firing, as a kill from Keffury would set then them off on a 8-2 run. WTAMU would look to capitalize off of a pair of attack errors by ASU but Sotello would add another set of kills to her total of 10 for the night and stifle the run attempt. After a second attempt to mount a comeback by the Lady Buffs was thwarted with kills from Lynn and Hanrahan, Blauser took the Belles to victory lane and completed the sweep with her second set ending kill of the night.

"It was nice to see our kids stay steady even when they were trying to make runs on the other side of the net," Waddington added. "We really did what we wanted to do on the court."

The Belles once again take to the road to continue conference play and face Texas A&M – Kingsville, Friday Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. before returning to Stephens Arena on Oct. 9 for a match up with Midwestern State.
