SAN ANGELO – The No. 11 Angelo State volleyball team swept Western New Mexico as they brought awareness to breast cancer with their annual "Dig Pink" match Friday night in the Junnell Center.
The Belles improved to 17-2 overall and 8-1 in the Lone Star Conference with Friday night's win. The ASU offense recorded a .241 clip for the match, while dropping in eight total aces to WNMU's two.  Sporting its 2016 edition "Dig Pink" jerseys, the Belles raised over $4000 dollars to help bring awareness to the fight against breast cancer. With the loss the Mustangs fell to 13-7, 5-4 LSC.
"I really liked what I saw in the first two sets," said ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "We played really clean and really low error during those two sets. Then in the third set [Western New Mexico] came out playing very low error and we made some un characteristic mistakes. I really liked how late in the third set, after I called the time out, we came out and didn't make another error after that point. I liked how we responded well to that adversity." Â
Mallory Blauser, Abbie Lynn and Morgan Seaton led the Belles offense against the Mustangs. Blauser headed the attack with 13 kills and four aces. This is the senior's fifth consecutive game with double-digit kills. Blauser also contributed a team second nine digs. Lynn followed with a squad second seven kills on the night. Rounding out the trio, Seaton checked in with six. Â The Big Spring native also marked a team leading .667 attack percentage for the match.
Anchoring the ASU defense was Mallory Davidson, Brianna Sotello and Leiyona Young. Davidson headed the defense with 15 digs against WNMU. Sotello was second on the squad as she added eight digs and a pair of blocks to her defensive stats. Â Offensively, she fired in six kills and a pair of aces. Leading ASU along the net, Young tallied four total blocks for the match. Â
Distributing for the Belles, Meghan Parker turned in 31 assists and two service aces against the Mustangs. This marked the freshman's 17th match of the season with at least 30 assists.
Parker got things started for the Belles in the first set dropping in an ace for the first point of the match. The Mustangs immediately responded taking a 6-4 lead. However, a WNMU attack error followed by a Sotello aces kicked off a 10-3 run for ASU, giving them a 14-9 lead. The Belles would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the match despite several attempts to rally by Western New Mexico. Lynn would rocket in the final blow of the set giving the Belles the 1-0 set lead.
In the second set the Belles again came out firing early, taking an early 6-3 lead. ASU continued to add to its lead as Sotello once again kicked off another massive 14-4 run, giving the Belles a solid 20-8 lead. The Mustangs could only add four more points before Seaton and Sotello added consecutive points to the board to close out the set in favor of the Belles. ASU would take a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the final set, Blauser would laser in a kill, placing ASU on the board first for the third consecutive set. Western New Mexico would keep the score tight and would regain the lead. Tied at 19, a Mustang attack error followed by a timely block from Young and Sotello placed the Belles back out in front. Angelo State would finish off the match with a 6-0 run that saw points from Blauser, Lynn, Sotello and Young.
The Belles will return to action Saturday, October 15 to face Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m. in the Junell Center. This match will be broadcasted live in high definition on RamTV (Suddenlink 6/106).
