ASU Falls to WT on Senior Day

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team celebrated its senior Sunday afternoon but were unable to get the win, falling 1-0 to West Texas A&M in the final home match of the season at the ASU Soccer Field.

The Belles (9-4-1, 5-3-0 LSC) outshot the Lady Buffs(9-4-0, 6-2-0 LSC) 15-9 in the matchup and had one more shot on goal than  WT, but were unable to find the back of the net in the game.

"It was a good shot that won WT the game," ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "They did well with their chances and that was the difference in the game."

Neither team was able to do much offensively in the first half, and although the Belles outshot the Lady Buffs 8-5, the half ended in a scoreless draw.

Senior Demi Tsambasis led the Belles offensively in the game, shooting five times and putting two on goal in the match. Ally Warren, Trenadey Scott and Shay Williams all got off two shots each in the match to tie for second on the team.

The lone goal for WT came just five minutes into the second half from Ronni Ajeto and was allowed by ASU goalkeeper Sammy Cude, moving the freshman's record to 9-4-1 on the season.

Following the match, ASU honored its seven seniors for their contributions to the program over the last four years. The class includes  Demi Tsambasis, Ashley Exford, Haley Mendel, Kathleen Keoughan, Lauren Perry, Shay Williams and Cynthia Andrews and was a part of ASU's first ever conference championship team in 2013 and the second one in 2015. The seniors have also led the Belles to NCAA tournament appearances in last two seasons.

"I can't imagine my college career without this soccer program," senior captain Kathleen Keoughan said. "I've made the best friends and had the best people to talk to and have guide me when I have problems, and I wouldn't be the person I am without this program."

The Belles have a quick turnaround before their next match as they take on UTPB at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Odessa. ASU will then go to Wichita Falls next weekend to take on Midwestern on Sunday.
