No. 10 Belles Secure LSC Regular Season Championship on Senior Day

SAN ANGELO – The No. 10 Angelo State volleyball team clinched the 2016 Lone Star Conference regular season championship and celebrated its graduating class with a sweep of Midwestern State (25-19, 25-19, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon.

The Belles extended its win streak to 14 matches and remained undefeated at home in 2016 with the sweep of the Mustangs. ASU also improved to 27-2 overall and 17-1 in the Lone Star Conference with Saturday's result.  By securing the LSC regular season championship, ASU has earned the right to host the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament from November 17 through November 19. With the loss, Midwestern State falls to 11-19, 5-13 LSC.

"It was a great environment to get a win in, with it being senior day there were a lot of families and fans in the stands," commented ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "I was pleased with how we finished and how it came together in the end was pretty cool. It is a huge advantage for us to host the conference tournament, because we have some of the best fans out there that will pack the Junell three nights in a row to try to help us win."

Senior Mallory Blauser led the way for the Belles as she recorded her 13th double-double of the 2016 season with an 11 kill and 14 dig performances. She also led the team from the service line with three aces on the afternoon.

Also leading the offensive efforts for ASU were juniors Abbie Lynn and Brianna Sotello. Lynn turned in a team second 10 kills and recorded a .500 attack percentage for the match. She also added a block assist to her defensive numbers. Sotello followed with nine kills and a solid .381 clip for the day. Defensively, the outside hitter chalked eight digs.

Leading the ASU defense was Mallory Davidson, Morgan Seaton and Tulani Titley. Davidson tallied a team most 18 digs against the Mustangs. This marked her 12th consecutive match with double-figure digs. The sophomore also added an ace to her current total of 23. Middle blockers, Seaton and Titley each recorded two total blocks to help thwart the oppositions attack. Seaton lead the team with a .636 clip for the match as she hammered in seven kills. Titley added five kills of her own as well.

Continuing to set for ASU was Meghan Parker. The freshman led the team with 40 assists and has now recorded her 13th match of the season with no fewer than 40 assists. She also assisted the defense with six digs and a pair of block assists.

The Belles got things started in the first set by taking an early 3-0 lead, as three straight serves from senior honoree, Zoey Hanrahan, were converted into consecutive points for the Belles. After MSU drove in two kills of its own, ASU would continue to add to the lead by building off of a pair of mustang errors with kills from Seaton and Sotello to give the team a 7-4 lead.  MSU would battle back and bring the game to a tie score five times but would be unable to take over the lead. With the score sitting at 17-17, a kill from Lynn would give the Belles the final push it would need to pull away with an 8-2 run. The run would also close out the set for the Belles as the final point would come off a MSU service error.

ASU would strike first again in the second set as Blauser fired in a kill. MSU quickly responded by taking over the lead with a pair of kills, but this would not phase the Belles as Lynn and Seaton would drive in consecutive kills to regain. Despite the two teams exchanging points, the Mustangs would be unable to regain the lead. Blauser would finish the set for ASU by driving in the final kill and Belles would enter the intermission with a 2-0 set lead.

A Mustang kill would start the final set, however the Belles would respond with a lengthy 11-0 run that saw big plays from Seaton, Blauser and Lynn. With ASU leading 15-4, Jennifer Doyna would check in with her second career ace. The Mustangs would score eight more point in the remainder of match as the ASU defense held it to a match low .054 clip. With 21-12 on the board, an Ali Davison kill kicked off a final 4-0 Belle run. Set up by Eadara Files, Titley would rocket in the final kill and secure the 2016 regular season championship for Angelo State Volleyball.

The Belles hit the road to New Mexico next week, where it will face Eastern New Mexico on Friday, November 11 at 7 p.m. (CST) and follow with a match against Western New Mexico on Saturday, November 12 at 6 p.m. (CST).
