No. 4/7 Belles Score Season High in 96-80 win over Northern Nazarene

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The No. 4/7 Angelo State women's basketball team had six players score in double figures to beat Northern Nazarene 96-80 at the Holiday Hoops Classic on Monday evening.

The Belles (9-0, 2-0 LSC) were efficient from the field with a season high 54.7 clip. Northern Nazarene (4-4) out rebounded ASU 40-39 and scored 32 points off 21 turnovers. Angelo State scored 50 points in the paint and received 39 points from their bench.

"I am extremely happy with the way we played today," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "We came out to Las Vegas to play two really good teams and we had two really tough games. I thought we played well in both game. We weren't perfect but we did the things necessary to win and for that I am really proud of them."

Madi Greenwood scored a career high 18 points to lead the Belles scoring attack. Taylor Dorsey scored 17 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Jasmine Prophet added 12 and Chenelle Pelle chipped in 11 points. Keanna Kelly and Christina Robinson each poured in 10 points.

The Belles jumped out to an early 11-6 leading in the first quarter as Greenwood capped off the run with one of her two 3-pointers. A quick 5-0 run by Northern Nazarene tied it at 11. The two teams traded leads and would tie the game for the fourth time at 16 with 2:26 to play in the first quarter. ASU finished the quarter on a 6-1 run as Lexi Murphy hit a 3-pointer to spark it.

Northern Nazarene trimmed the Belles lead to 25-23 two minutes into the second quarter until Christina Robinson drained a corner 3-pointer. A NNU turnover led to a Kenna Kelly 3-pointer and a 8-0 run pushed the lead to 35-25. The lead was trimmed to three points twice over the final two minutes of the second quarter but Greenwood sank a pair of free throws and a layup to put the Belles up 50-44 at the break.

ASU came out of the break scoring the first four points. Prophet went to work in the paint with a bucket and Dorsey drove the lane on back-to-back possessions for a 12 point lead at 56-44. The Belles would continue to lead by at least nine and closed out the third quarter on a 9-4 run for a 74-60 advantage after three quarters.

The Belles held a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter and built to its largest lead of 21 points at 94-73 with 52 seconds left.

Carly Parker led Norther Nazarene with 15 points and Lexi Tubbs added 14 points.

The Belles will return to the court on Saturday, December 31st against Cameron in Lawton, Oklahoma to continue its Lone Star Conference play.
