Prophet's 33 Points Lead Belles Past Texas A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team used Jasmine Prophet's career high 33 points to defeat Texas A&M-Commerce 72-64 on the road.

The Belles (16-6, 9-3 LSC) held the Lions (14-11, 7-6 LSC) to just 34.2-percent shooting. ASU hit 45.9-percent from the floor and out rebounded TAMUC 45-40. The 16 wins on the season is the most since the 2010-11 season.

"We told them we had to weather the storm after the first quarter," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "Texas A&M-Commerce is a good team and made their first eight or nine shots. We were able force them to take perimeter shots and once we made some shots we were able to slow their transition game down. I thought we kept our poise at the end when Texas A&M-Commerce made a push."

Prophet's 33 points came on 14-of-21 shooting and 5-of-10 from the charity stripe. The junior grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. Christina Robinson scored a career high 12 points and recorded six rebounds. Brea Mitchell filled the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists during the game. Taylor Dorsey added eight points and 10 rebounds. It is the fourth time Dorsey had recorded at least 10 rebounds in a game.

Texas A&M-Commerce jumped out in the first quarter and scored 22 points on .474 shooting. The Belles had to battle being down by as much as 20-10 and 22-12 in the first quarter.

The second quarter was a different story as ASU's defense set the tone. TAMUC was limited to four points through the first six minutes of the quarter. The Belles would have runs of 7-2 and after a layup by Prophet at the 4:33 mark would trim TAMUC's deficit to 26-24. The Lions would push the lead to seven until a Dorsey layup with 15 seconds left made the score 31-26 at the break.

The Belles came out on fire in the third quarter scoring the first eight points to take a 35-31 lead. Mitchell scored five straight points that gave ASU a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Robinson and KeAnna Kelly each scored to push the advantage to six at 39-33 with 4:25 to play. The two teams would trade baskets over the last 3:37 until TAMUC made it 48-44 at the end of the third quarter.

Mitchell and Prophet opened up the fourth quarter with back-to-back baskets to extend the lead to 52-44. The biggest ASU lead came at 57-46 at the 6:15 mark after a jumper from Robinson. TAMUC wouldn't quit using a 13-3 run to make the game one possession at 61-59. The Belles were up 66-64 with 1:40 to go and went to Prophet. The junior converted with a layup and after a missed TAMUC 3-pointer, Robinson drained two free throws to put ASU up 70-64. Robinson iced the game seconds later with two more free throws.

Shomari Harris and Artaejah Gay led the Lions with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The Belles will return home for their final regular season home game of the year on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. against Cameron.
