DENTON, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team dropped the second game of a tough back-to-back with Texas Woman's 77-70 on Sunday afternoon in Denton.
The Belles (18-7, 11-4 LSC) shot 40-percent from the field and nine 3-pointers. The Pioneers (20-7, 10-5 LSC) out rebounded ASU 46-35 and scored 21 second change points. TWU also made 11 three pointers and scored 11 points off eight ASU turnovers.
Brea Mitchell led ASU with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Jasmine Prophet and Taylor Dorsey each recorded double-doubles. Prophet scored 16 points and recorded 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Dorsey added 12 points and 10 assists. It is the junior's seventh of the season and second double-double with points and assists. Lexi Murphy tied her career high with 11 points.
The Belles were up 39-38 at the end of the first half after hitting 46.7-percent from the field. ASU limited TWU to just 35.1-percent from the field in the first two quarters.
The Pioneers opened the second half by holding ASU scoreless over the first 4:06 of the third quarter. TWU's Kenesha Saygo drained four 3-pointers as the Pioneers went on a 16-0 run to take a 54-39 lead. The Belles responded with an 8-0 run highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by Mitchell and Kiahna Thompson to trim the deficit to 54-47. KeAnna Kelly's three pointer at the 2:23 mark stopped four unanswered TWU points. Jasmine Prophet hit a layup and a free throw at the end of the third quarter to make it 60-53.
Lexi Murphy opened up the fourth quarter with back-to-back 3-poitners and a layup by Prophet made it a one-point deficit at 62-61 with 7:53 to go in the fourth quarter. TWU would push its lead back to seven points, 71-64, with a 9-3 run. ASU would not get closer than seven over the final 5:44 as TWU secured a 77-70 victory.
Saygo led TWU by scoring 31 points with 27 coming from behind the arc.
The Belles will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5:30 p.m.Â
