PORTALES, New Mexico – The Angelo State baseball team completed its month long road tour with a sweep of Eastern New Mexico on Sunday afternoon as it shutout the Greyhounds 11-0.
The Rams moved to 11-6 overall on the season and 4-0 in the Lone Star Conference play. ASU tallied 11 runs and nine RBIs off of five hits. The team committed no errors in the field. Starting pitcher Paxton DeLaGarza was credited with his first win of the season and Graylon Brown earned his third save of the season. With the loss the Greyhounds slid to 7-11 overall and 0-4 in the LSC.
"We did what we need to do and played well this weekend," said ASU head baseball coach Kevin Brooks. "I thought we did a really good job of sticking to our game plan. Though we didn't have many we got big time hits when we had runner on base. When we get guys on we do a really good job of getting them around the bases and maximizing our hits. Paxton had a great game as he went out and threw strikes and did what he needed to do."
Sam Kohler (1-for-2) and David Goggin got the scoring started for the Rams as they were driven home by a Jarryd Klemm (1-for-4))single to center field to make the game 3-0 in the top of the first. Kohler was then plated again in the third, off of an error by the ENMU second baseman. With the score sitting at 4-0, Tyler Coolbaugh (1-for-4) then crossed Steven Pinales with a deep pop out to left field.
In the seventh, Coolbaugh returned to add the remainder of his five total RBIs for the day with a base loaded, inside the park homer that pushed the Rams lead to 8-0. ASU would complete its scoring for the day in the top of the eight with a Kohler RBI single, which was followed by Clay Wegner grounding out to plate Nathan Ruane. Kohler then took home off a wild pitch to secure the 11-0 lead.
DeLaGarza tossed five full innings sitting down four and giving up zero runs off of no hits. Brown entered the game in the bottom of the sixth for some relief work and closed the game out. He struck out three and allowed two hits and no runs.
The Rams will take to Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium on Friday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. to take on Texas A&M – Kingsville for game one of a four game series. Friday's game had been officially been marked as a blackout game and the first 300 fans through the gate will receive a commemorative black t-shirt.
