DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – The Angelo State women's basketball team dominated St. Edward's in an 82-53 win in the opening game of the Daytona Hoops Classic on Monday afternoon.
The Belles improve to 6-2 after limiting the Hilltoppers (6-6) to just 33.3 percent from the field. ASU scored 40 points in the paint and added 19 points off second chance points. Angelo State out rebounded St. Edward's 49-30.
"This was a great team win," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Renae Shippy said. "Everybody got to play a lot of minutes and we received contributions from everybody. Our girls knew the importance of getting this regional win and they came out and executed. It was awesome to have senior leader, Ekiya Gray, score 14 points in her first game of the year and I'm excited to see more from her."
Four players scored in double figures and two finished with double-doubles. Madi Greenwood scored a career high 20 points including four 3-pointers. The senior added nine rebounds as well. De'Anira Moore and Dezirae Hampton each had a double-double. It is Moore's fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Hampton picked up her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ekiya Gray chipped in 14 points in her season debut for the Belles. All 10 players that entered the game scored for ASU.
The Belles set the tone early opening the game on a 15-4 run. Marquita Daniels started the game with a 3-pointer while Greenwwood scored five in the first six minutes. The Hilltoppers were limited to 27.8 percent from the field and ASU leaned on its rebounding to score eight second chance points on 18 first quarter rebounds. Â SEU trimmed the double-digit deficit to seven with 2:45 to play but ASU scored the last seven points of the quarter for a 25-11 advantage.
The second quarter was not as offensive as the first but ASU pushed its lead to 17. Five different Belles' scored in the second quarter while Greenwood wouldn't score but did grab seven rebounds in the quarter. Dearria Watson hit a jumper with 55 seconds left in the quarter to but the Belles up 35-18 at the break.
A hot start to the third quarter propelled Angelo State on a 14-6 run. Greenwood scored eight of the 14 points to give ASU its largest lead of the quarter at 22 with the score at 49-27. The Belles ended the quarter on a 7-2 run highlighted by Mikayla Blount's 3-pointer to make the score 60-39 after three quarters.
Moore opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups and a free throw to spark a 7-0 run. Gray took over as the offensive threat in the fourth quarter scoring 10 of the 22 points for ASU. A 10-2 run that showcased a 3-pointer form Kynese Davis and five straight points from Gray gave the Belles their largest lead of the game at 79-44 before the final of 82-53.
Angelo State will face Illinois Springfield tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. EDT / 12:30 p.m. EDT in the Daytona Hoops Classic.
