SAN ANGELO – The No. 2 Angelo State softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Oklahoma Christian with 2-0 and 3-0 wins on Thursday afternoon at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (28-1) have won 24 consecutive games extending the school record streak and have held opponents scoreless over the last 17 innings with the pair of shutouts. Oklahoma Christian falls to 19-11 on the season after having an 11-game win streak snapped.
The first game was a pitching duel between Brandy Marlett and Kalie Upton. Neither team was able to score through the first three innings of the game.
The Rambelles had a scoring opportunity in the second. Kenedy Urbany recorded ASU's first hit of the game with a single but a fly ball ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Marlett held OCU scoreless through four innings and Alexis Evans answered in the bottom of the fourth. The senior crushed a ball through the wind that went over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run.
Morgan Hill made the 2-0 lead stand coming in to pitch three innings of relief for her second save of the season. The junior only gave up three hits and struck out one. Marlett earned her 13th win of the season in four innings of work. The junior struck out five and only allowed three hits.
Game two was another pitching duel between the two schools. Urbany struck out five batters and held OCU without a hit through the first five innings of the game.
It wasn't until the third inning that ASU put a runner in scoring position. After a walk by Katlyn Herzog, Brooke Mangold came into to pinch run and stole second base. It is Mangold's 12th stolen base of the season. Madison Greenwell sent a ball over the right fielder that hit the fence and used her speed to get to third and score Mangold. Bailey Wallace brought home Greenwell with a grounder to make it 2-0.
The Rambelles added an insurance run in the sixth. Taegan Kirk hit a bloop double to right center and Evans brought her home on a grounder to shortstop.
OCU broke up Urbany's no-hitter attempt in the sixth with a line drive to center field but it would be the only hit she would allow. The senior picked up her 10th win of the season and her third shutout of the year. She struck out six batters and walked three in the win.
The Rambelles will host No. 12 West Texas A&M for a three-game series starting on Friday. The game is designated as Youth Night and all children 12 and under accompanied by an adult will receive free admission.
