Rams Drop Opener to Kingsville

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State baseball team dropped game one of a four-game series to Texas A&M-Kingsville 3-2 on Friday night at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

The Rams (24-7, 6-2 LSC) surrendered just nine hits all night to the Javelinas (19-8, 5-0 LSC) while collecting seven of their own, but fell one run short in the loss.

Pitcher Matt Shannon Started the game on the mound for ASU was just two out shorts of his second straight complete game, going 8.1 innings on the bump. The junior surrendered eight of the nine hits and just one walk, giving up all three runs. He struck out ten batters, just one off his career high.

Neither team could get anything going offensively through the first two innings of the game, but the Javelinas broke the tie in the top of the third with back-to-back solo home runs to lead off the inning.

The Rams got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Right fielder Steven Pinales led off the inning followed by walks from Jacob Boston Tyler Coolbaugh. Pinales came around to score when the next batter grounded into an out.

Boston had the best day of any Ram at the plate, getting on base all four times he came up with a pair of singles and two walks. The Arizona native also stole one base.

The run that mattered for the Javelinas came in the top of the ninth inning. The leadoff hitter, Christian Caudle, got on base for TAMK on a walk. The next batter was Shannon's last and he got the batter to pop up to the catcher. Joe Hauser came in and gave up a single, struck one batter out and then another single to score the run before the Rams got out of the inning.

ASU tried for a comeback with two outs in the ninth inning as Elias Aguirre singled to centerfield and Mitch Henshaw doubled him home before the third out was recorded.

Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 4 p.m. Following the conclusion of the doubleheader, the Rams will host a concert from the Zach Edwards Band also at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
