MIDLAND – The Angelo State football team scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, taking down UT Permian Basin 44-20 Saturday night at Grande Communications Stadium.
The Rams (4-4, 3-3 LSC) entered the final quarter of play locked in a 20-20 tie with the Falcons, but score two offensive touchdowns and one defensive one, capping the game off with a  field goal in their second straight road win.
ASU started off well enough, forcing a UTPB punt on the game's opening drive and driving down for a field goal on their own first drive.
The field goal was the first of three on the night for Ram kicker Connor Flanigan, who hit on all of his attempts and was perfect on PATs as well. The three total field goals was one less than the ASU single-game record and pushed Flanigan to 13 on the year, which leads the Lone Star Conference.
Neither team was able to get anything else going on offense through the rest of the first quarter, but the second quarter got things going as the Falcons got on the board with a touchdown, giving them their first-ever lead against the Rams.
ASU responded, scoring back-to-back touchdowns on a four-yard rush from Tyrese Nathan and a 21-yard pass from starting quarterback Payne Sullins to Keke Chism.
Sullins had a strong performance on the road, completing 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 275 yards wit two touchdowns. He found Lawson Ayo six times on the night, as the Sunnyvale native led the receiving corps with 105 yards on six catches. Chism led in receptions on the night though, with seven.
UTPB got back in the end zone before the half ended, and the two teams went into their locker rooms with ASU up by four.
Both teams struggled again in the third quarter, as ASU hit just a field goal and UTPB got their final touchdown of the night, tying the game at 20-all before the final quarter.
The Ram defense forced three turnovers in the final quarter of play alone, as the defensive line broke into the back field and the ASU defensive backs played strong coverage.
Angelo State retook the lead for good on their first offensive drive of the quarter, as wide receiver Larry Johnson got behind the defense and Sullins found him for a 43-yeard touchdown pass.
They scored again after a defensive stop, using quarterback Carsen Cook in a goal line package. Cook completed a two-yard pass to Weston McIntire to double the ASU lead.
On the first play of UTPB's ensuing drive, linebacker Hunter Kyle all but guaranteed the win, picking off his second pass of the night and returning it 31 yards for a touchdown. Kyle was the leader of the ASU defense on the night, racking up a team-high 11 tackles along with the two interceptions. He now has four on the season.
Leddy French also reached the double-digit tackle mark with 10 on the night, and Markus Jones added another three tackles for loss to his already nation-leading total, two of which were sacks.
Flanigan hit one final field goal in the quarter, and the ASU held strong until the final horn for the 44-20 win.
Angelo State will now return home for its two final home games of the season, first taking on Adams State next Saturday at 4 p.m. at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
