Big second half leads Belles past Tigers

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team opened the season with a perfect 2-0 record after an 84-57 win over West Alabama on Sunday afternoon in Denton.

The Belles were up just nine at halftime, but outscored the Tigers 49-31 in the second half in the blowout win.

Both teams struggled to shoot early in the game, but ASU took the lead five minutes into the game on a three-pointer from Catara Samuel. Marquita Daniels followed with a three-pointer of her own to put ASU up 9-4 with just over three minutes to go. The Tigers pushed back and pulled within one, but a layup from Daniels pushed the lead back to three at the end of the first period.

UWA kept the game close early in the second quarter, even taking a brief lead at 19-17. With 1:35 left in the half though, Dezirae Hampton hit a three-pointer to spark a 9-2 run.

Hampton was the team's leading rebounder in the game, pulling down 11 boards. She was also one of four Angelo State players to finish in double figures against West Alabama. De'Anira Moore led the team with 17 points, while Daniels scored 15 and Hampton and newcomer Maria Delgado both got 14 apiece.

The second half went much smoother for the Belles offensively, as they started hitting shots and pushed the lead out to 16 by the end of the third quarter.

ASU did not let up in the fourth quarter though, pushing the lead to its widest margin at 32 points on a pair of free throws from Essence Johnson, and cruising to the 27-point win.

The Belles are off Thanksgiving week, but will begin Lone Star Conference play the following week, traveling to take on Texas A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State.
