STEPHENVILLE -Â The Angelo State volleyball team was upset by Texas A&M-Kingsville Thursday afternoon 3-2 in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
The Belles (22-9) took the lead in the first set with a win, but could not hold on as they made 34 errors in the match to lose to the No. 6 seeded Javelinas, who will now move onto face Texas A&M-Commerce in the tournament semifinals.
Set one went about as well as the Belles could have hoped, as they hit .370 with just one error and held the Javelinas to a .188 hitting percentage for the early lead.
TAMUK flipped the script I the second set however, hitting .318 themselves and holding the Belles to an abysmal .030 hitting percentage for a 25-15 win.
The Javelinas carried the momentum into the third set, building an early 11-6 lead. ASU kept within striking distance, and made its run down 20-15, scoring five straight points, including bac-to-back kills by Audrey Fragniere to tie the match at 20-all.
Fragniere was ASU's best attacker in the match, notching 21 kills overall and playing strong defense as well with seven digs and two blocks.
TAMUK staved off the comeback in the third set however, and went ahead 2 sets to 1.
Angelo State did come back and tie the match up in the fourth set with a 25-23 win. A 5-1 lead early in the match was capped off by a kill from Fragniere and put the Belles up 11-6.
The Javelinas stayed close, however, and evened things up at 22-22 before yet another kill from Fragniere stopped the TAMUK run and ASU was able to close out the set.
In the decisive fifth set, the two teams traded points until a 6-1 TAMUK run put them up 9-4. The Belles tried to come back and pulled within two points, but could not close the gap as the Javelinas ended the match with a 15-11 set five win.
Angelo State will now wait for the Division II Volleyball Selection show to see if it will continue playing in the NCAA Postseason Tournament. The Belles will ranked No. 6 in the most recent South Central Regional Rankings, and the selection show will take place on November 11 at 9 p.m.
