Belles win fourth straight

WICHITA FALLS – Behind a season-high 18 kills from Sundara Chinn, the Angelo State volleyball team earned its fourth straight win, defeating MSU Texas 3-1 on Friday night.

Chinn was one kill away from matching her career-high of 19 kills set last season, hitting .342 and adding in 14 digs for her third double-double of the season.

"We played a pretty good match overall, besides a sloppy set two," Angelo State head volleyball coach Chuck Waddington said. "You have to give credit to Midwestern for pushing back. We were really effective in the middle tonight with Anna and Baleigh and Sundara also had a great night."

The Belles started off the match as well as coach Waddington could have asked, opening up a 10-2 lead and forcing a timeout from the Mustangs. The run included five kills from Chinn.

ASU continued to push, scoring points on a service ace from McKenna Hanssen and a several kills from Audrey Fragniere, eventually pushing the lead as wide as 15 points at 24-9 on a service ace from Chloe Robinson.

Playing her third straight game at libero, Robinson set a new season high with 23 digs and a pair of service aces.

MSU Texas scored three straight points at that point, marking their longest run of the set, before Chinn ended the set one win with yet another kill.

Set two was a closer affair, as the Mustangs kept it close and even took a lead a 17-14, before the Belles responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 18-all. ASU was unable to keep the momentum and finish out the set, however, and the Mustangs earned their only set win, 25-23.

Angelo State started better in the third set, scoring the first four points and taking an early 7-2 lead on a kill from Bailey Drum that was assisted by Meghan Parker.

Parker had 43 assists against the Mustangs, and adding in 10 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.

The Mustangs kept things close in the third set, pulling within two points at 13-11. ASU responded, with Baleigh Allen notching a kill for the next point and sparking a 5-0 run. Allen had seven kills and led the team with four more blocks.

Junior Anna Graham followed closely behind with three blocks of her own and was an offensive force with 12 kills and .480 hitting percentage.

MSU Texas stopped the run with a couple points of their own, but the Belles closed out the set on another five-point run and ended it with a kill from Fragniere.

Set four was more smooth sailing for the Belles, as they built an early lead and held onto it the entire set. With Parker at the service line, they scored the final four points of the match to secure the win.

Angelo State will play once more this weekend, taking on Cameron at 2 p.m. in Lawton, Oklahoma.
