SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State Belles easily defeated the Western New Mexico Mustangs 88-51 to move to 19-4 (14-3 Lone Star Conference) on the season. With the win and Eastern New Mexico's loss to Texas A&M-Commerce, the Belles are now tied for first place in the conference with West Texas A&M.
The Belles placed six players in double figures on the evening. De'Anira Moore had a double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She added three blocks on the night. Â Dezirae Hampton also had a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, hitting three three pointers in the process. Additionally, Hampton had five assists and two steals, putting her stamp on all aspects of the game. Marquita Daniels also stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Essence Johnson had a solid performance with 10 points and five rebounds in her 20 minutes on the floor. Asia Davis and Maria Delgado also had 10 points on the night.
The game got off to a fast start, with both teams shooting 53 percent. At the end of one, Angelo State led 30-23. The pace slowed down a little in the second quarter as ASU oustcored Western 17-11 and took a 13 point lead into the half.
In the third quarter, the Belles came out of the locker room with a renewed intensity, outscoring the Mustangs 27-9 and holding them to 19 percent shooting in the quarter to put the game out of reach. Just for good measure, the Belles held the Mustangs to just eight points in the fourth quarter, completing the blowout.
For the game, the Belles shot 44 percent from the field and 36 percent from three point range while holding the Mustangs to 33 percent from the field and 28 percent from three while getting to the free throw line 28 times compared to the Mustangs' 15 trips. The Belles also forced 18 turnovers on the game, scoring 23 points off of those giveaways.
