Rams Sweep First Series Doubleheader with Second Inning Rallies

PORTALES, NM – The Angelo State Rams showed no signs of slowing down their offensive assault this season as they outscored the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds 26-3 in their Friday doubleheader. With the two wins, the Rams move to 32-7 overall with a 12-2 conference record. Josh Elvir collected three triples in the two games and now sits at the top of the conference in that category as well.

The first game of the day was quickly out of reach for the Greyhounds. After both teams plated a single run in the first inning, the Rams caught fire and exploded for nine in the second. Joe Scott Pace had a two RBI single through the left side that brought in two, Elvir tripled to clear the bases, Lachlan Mayo hit his seventh home run of the season to add two more runs, and then Jordan Williams doubled down the left field line to inflict the final two runs of damage in the inning.

It was entirely the Rams' game after that. Angelo State scored in two more innings as Nicholas Novak brought in two runs in the fourth inning with a single through the right side. Jacob Finke would also pick up an RBI hit by pitch in the inning. In the sixth, Josh Elvir made his second three-bag trip of the game to bring in a run and then Lachlan Mayo brought him in to score with a ground ball to the second baseman.

Josh Barnett started the game on the bump, but was pulled after giving up a run on a triple and a sac fly. Tyler Lesley finished off the rest of the six inning game, giving up only one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two.

The Rams' bats seemed to have plenty of juice left in them for the second game of the day as Angelo State capped off the doubleheader sweep with an 11-1 win. Much like the first game, the Rams lineup came alive in the second inning by putting a 6 spot on the board before tacking on two runs in the sixth and their final three in the seventh.

Jordan Williams swung the hot bat in game two, going 3-4 with two RBI. Josh Elvir led the team in RBI with three on a 2-5 performance in which he collected a double and a triple.

Shannon Broussard threw a complete seven inning game as the Rams run ruled the Greyhounds. The lefty held ENMU to just one run on seven hits and induced 13 groundouts.

The series continues in doubleheader fashion once again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
