STEPHENVILLE, TX – The Angelo State Rams moved to 37-7 overall and 17-2 in the Lone Star Conference Friday afternoon as they took down the Tarleton Texans in their doubleheader. The Rams are now 7-0 against the Texans this season. After fighting back late in the first game of the day to take a 4-3 victory, the Rams lineup was back to its usual form as ASU hung 14 runs to close out the day.
Game 1
The Tarleton Texans kept the Rams silent in the first three innings of play while scratching across a single run of their own in the bottom of the second inning. ASU finally found the board in the top of the fourth when Parker Bramlett hit a sacrifice fly deep enough into center field to bring in Nick Seginowich from third base to score. The Rams would then benefit from a Texan error for their second run of the inning as an error on the first baseman allowed Jacob Finke to cross the plate.
As a team that struggled when outscored at the beginning of games, the Rams may have faced a much larger issue as they headed into the sixth inning down 3-2. However, Ram fans have witnessed the mid-late season growth of the Rams who have proven they can catch fire at any point of a game now, much in line with head coach Kevin Brooks' reinforcement of the message that the team is focusing on continuing to improve late into the season while others plateau. Although they didn't exactly explode for multiple runs, a leadoff single from Nick Seginowich gave the team a shot to negate the deficit they faced. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Seginowich was then moved to third via a Riley Peterson single through the left side. A passed ball would ultimately plate Seginowich to tie the game up at 3-3.
After holding the Texans runless in the bottom of the sixth, ASU was looking to plate a go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. It was Jordan Williams and Nicholas Novak who got the wheels turning with back to back singles. Seginowich loaded the bases by drawing a walk, and Michael Urquidi was tasked with the two-out hero opportunity. Urquidi, who has the potential to hold the record for most walks in his career at Angelo State, tacked on one more to plate the go-ahead run. He needs only two more to tie Clay Calfee's career record of 97.
Game 2
The Rams offensive production returned to its normal self after battling the wind, as ASU scored in five of the seven innings in the second game of the day, including seven runs in the fifth inning alone. Just as impressively, Trent Baker collected the seven inning complete game shutout while allowing only two hits. There were seven different Rams who drove in a run, and seven that collected walks. On the defensive side, Baker struck out seven while walking only one.
After not scoring in the first inning, Angelo State plated one run in the second, third, and fourth. The floodgates were opened in the fifth as the Rams scored seven runs and then piled on four more in the seventh to take the 14-0 win. Josh Elvir was good for his 15th home run of the season and four RBI in the Kemah native's 2-3 performance. He also crossed the plate as a runner twice and drew two walks.
Jordan Williams also had a 2-3 outing in the second game of the day. The redshirt freshman continues to put up fantastic numbers early in his ASU career. Williams currently carries a .371 batting average with 56 hits, seven doubles, and 30 RBI. He has started all 44 games of the season. Â
The series finale will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th with the Rams primed for another sweep. Links to follow the game will be provided on the team's schedule, or you can tune in to 1260 KKSA.
