Rambelles Fall Against No. 4 Lions In Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – The Angelo State Belle basketball team traveled to Commerce, Texas to take on the No. 4 Texas A&M-Commerce Lions in Commerce, Texas and fell in a nail-biting loss against the Lions.
The Belles are now 12-6 overall and 9-5 in conference.
 
In Case You Missed It:
First Quarter:
  • A second chance jumper from Sawyer Lloyd brought the Belles to a two-point deficit as the Lions defense kept the Belles from scoring for over two and a half minutes, 2-4.
  • A three from Catara Samuel brought the Lions four point lead to an end as the Belles cut the Lions lead from six to three, 5-8. Samuels three snapped a four minute scoreless run for the ASU as well.
  • Commerce's speed and defense allowed them to score 12 points quickly and maintain control of the first quarter. A made jump shot and free throw from De'Anira Moore cut the Lions lead down to 12 with 35 seconds left in the quarter.
Second Quarter
  • A jumper from Asia Davis started the second quarter for ASU, cutting Commerces lead to 13, 10-23.
  • Two free throws from Moore cut the Lions lead back down to 14 after Commerce made a three, 12-26.
  • After Commerce made a jumper and a three point to extend their lead to 19, Lloyd scored another layup for ASU, cutting the Lions lead back to 17, 14-31.
  • A foul on Kiley Brown on a made jump shot sent Brown to the free throw line where she drained a free throw to cut the Lions lead to 16, 17-33.
  • A layup from Angelo Hayden and a three pointer from Samantha Rocha, assisted by Hayden, cut the Lions lead to 15 points with five minutes left on the clock, 22-37.
  • Another made three pointer from Brown cut the Lions lead even further to 12, 25-37.
  • With 3:29 left on the clock, Brown knocks down two free throws to keep the Lions to a 12 point lead, 27-39.
  • Davis sank two free throws, and Hayden made one of two to bring ASU within 11 points with 1:38 left in the second quarter, 30-41.
Third Quarter:
  • A layup from Moore cut the Lions lead down from 18 to 16, breaking the Belles scoreless streak of two minutes, 32-48.
  • Two free throws from Lloyd cut the Lions lead again to 14,36-50, with a little over five minutes left in the third quarter.
  • Commerce would score two jumpers to bring their lead back to 18, but another made free throw from Samuel cut the lead again to 17, 37-54.
  • Several free throws from Davis and Moore kept the Lions lead from growing, keeping Commerce to a 17 point lead over ASU, 40-57.
  • A free throw from Samuel and a layup from Moore, with the assist from Lloyd, brought the Lions lead down to by three to 14, 43-57.
  • A layup from Moore ends the quarter for the Belles as the Blue and Gold trailed by 16 with 45 seconds left on the clock, 45-61.
Fourth Quarter
  • A layup from Davis starts the fourth quarter for the Belles as Commerces lead ASU by 18, 47-65.
  • Two free throws from Moore, plus a three pointer and layup from Lana Marov cut down the Lions lead to 11, 54-65.
  • Two free throws from Davis and a three pointer from Marov cut the Lions lead down to 11 once again, with 5:39 left on the clock, 59-70.
  • A free throw and made layup from Moore brought the Belles deficit into single digits as the Lions lead was cut down to eight points, 62-70.
  • A turnaround jumper from Samuel brought the Belles within six points with 2:49 left on the clock, 64-70.
  • The Belles made a valiant comeback attempt, coming within six points of taking control of the lead, but the Lions speed, defensive gameplay, and quick scoring proved too much for ASU as the Belles fell to the No. 4 Lions, 67-78.
Key Players
  • De'Anira Moore led the Belles offense into action against the Lions, scoring 17 points for Angelo State. Moore shot 5-11 from the field and 7-10 from the free throw line, along with six total rebounds, two on offense and four on defense, and two assists, six blocks, and one steal.
  • Lana Marov continues to be one of the Belles main offensive players, scoring 11 points against Commerce. Marov shot 4-7 from the field and 3-6 from the three-point line. Marov registered three defensive rebounds for Angelo State.
  • Asia Davis continues to prove her offensive capabilities, scoring 10 points for Angelo State, shooting 3-8 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. Davis registered one assist for the Belles against Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Belles return to their home court as they face Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M once again in conference play. The Belles play Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, February 6 at 5:30 p.m., and West Texas A&M on Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m.
