SAN ANGELO – With only four unbeaten team in Lone Star Conference play entering this set of weekend's matches, it was guaranteed to lose a team from the unbeaten ranks with tonight's match between #3 Angelo State, 4-0 in conference play, and Texas A&M-Kingsville, 3-0 in conference play, and it was the host Belles who handed the Javelinas their first loss of the season, sweeping the visitors in straight sets.
The Belles held the Javelinas to a zero hitting percentage in both the first and third sets, thanks in part to a staggering 13 blocks and 63 digs in three sets, with the 63 digs representing a season-best mark for the Belles.
The Belles raced out to a hot start early, winning eight of the matches' first ten points, sailing to a set one victory.
The second set saw the Javelinas rebound, holding a lead at 13-9 before
Kailyn Gilbreath held serve for the Belles, going on a five-point scoring run that included three consecutive Javelina attack errors. The Belles would claim the lead and not relinquish it for the rest of the set.
The Belles' third set included an early 8-0 run where libero
Chloe Patton held serve, which included four different Belles recording kills in four consecutive points.
Sophia Berg led all players with a season-high 14 kills, only making one error and hitting .448 for the match. The Georgetown native was the only player to reach double-digit kills and accounted for a third of all Belles' kills for the match.
Gilbreath recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 21 assists and a season-high 18 digs. The senior also added nine kills, falling one short of her first triple-double of the season.
Defensively,
Baleigh Allen blocked eight Javelina attacks, equaling the entire Javelina squad in that category.
Delaney Fuller recorded 16 digs and Patton dug 12 Javelina attack attempts.
The Belles are now 12-2 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. They host Texas A&M International tomorrow at 2 p.m.
