Dallas, Texas – In what was a cagey match between Angelo State and Texas A&M-Commerce in the semifinals of the LSC Tournament, the Belles scored a pair of goals against the Lions, much like their first matchup on October 16th; however, this time, the best defense in the LSC held strong and did not concede as the Belles take a 2-0 win all the way to the LSC Tournament Championship match.
The Belles will match up against top seed DBU on Sunday in a rematch of this past spring's LSC Championship Tournament Final.
On the match, the Belles out-shot the Lions 17-12, with the Belles finding the target eight times while the Lions only pressured Belles goalkeeper Kira Miller one time in the whole match.
The Lions came out of the gate faster of the two teams in the match, with eight shots in the first half to the Belles' four; however, the sixth-seeded Belles would force 13 shots in the second half, including two that found the back of the net.
After a long run by Maddi Kyle through the Lions midfield and into the box, Mariah Griffin would score her second goal of the season in the 67th minute, hitting a left-footed effort from the right side of the box past Lions goalkeeper Jan Peters.
"It was a thing of beauty!" said head coach Travis McCorkle on Griffin's goal. "We talk with Mariah all the time, we tell her that she needs to be more confident."
"It was really great to see Mariah have some confidence and her defender took away the path and Mariah changed it and just beat the player and scored a great goal, a fantastic game-winner."
The Belles would double their lead 13 minutes later to seal the game. An Avery McNeme shot was saved by Peters off the crossbar, bouncing to Griffin. The freshman would tap it over to Gabby Villagrand, who snuck the ball into the net.
"A month ago, we were at Oklahoma Christian, we had some of those chances and we just didn't throw ourselves into it and gamble, and today, we did and Gabby gets the goal and that seals the game," said McCorkle.
The Belles defense has not conceded a single goal in LSC Tournament play since the start of the 2018 tournament (eight matches).
Sunday's match will be broadcast live on the LSC Network and is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.
"We're going to have to rest and recover and then we're gonna have to leave everything on the field if we want a chance to get into the NCAA regional," said McCorkle about Sunday's match. "We need the win, we need to win on Sunday, so I'm sure that the girls will put everything they have into it."
