SAN ANGELO, Texas – For the third game in a row, the top-ranked Angelo State baseball team defeated Texas A&M International in eight innings, as the Rams swept the Dustdevils on Sunday with a 20-8 victory at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
Scoring double-digit runs for the 11
th game this season, the Rams improve to 14-2 overall and 10-2 in the Lone Star Conference standings while TAMIU moves to 6-15 both overall and in conference play.
Unlike the first two games, offense came early for both teams in the final game of the series as the Dustdevils jumped out ahead, scoring two runs off a homer to left field in the top of the first inning.
Angelo State answered as
Nick Seginowich picked up where he left off the night before, hitting another three-run homer to score
Josh Elvir and
Jordan Williams as the Rams took a 3-2 advantage after one.
In the following inning, TAMIU retook the lead, hitting three RBI-singles along with a two-RBI double and a sacrifice fly to score six runs in the second to go up 8-3.
The Rams cut into the lead once again in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an error before Elvir brought in a run with a shot to right field and
Aaron Walters hit a single to left field, scoring two more runs to bring the deficit to 8-7 in favor of the Dustdevils.
After a couple of scoreless innings, Angelo State tied the game with a sacrifice fly by
Jackson Hardy in the fifth inning, scoring
Koby Kelton to make it 8-8. ASU poured it on the sixth inning, scoring eight runs to pull ahead of TAMIU. Seginowich and
Aaron Walters hit back-to-back home runs to score three runners, followed by an RBI-double from Kelton and a grand slam homer by Elvir.
Six different Rams collected at least one RBI on the day with Elvir leading with six RBIs after going 6-for-6 at the plate with five runs scored. After him was Seginowich with five RBIs and Williams and Walters both with three.
Elvir tallied another RBI in the eighth with a single up the middle while Williams ended the game with a three-run blast to 10-run rule the Dustdevils with his first home as a Ram.
Carson Childers picked up the win for the Rams, improving to 2-0 after tossing two innings of relief. Also pitching in relief was
Mat Szabo and
Jake Morgan who tossed three innings and one inning respectively, as all three players combined for six scoreless innings and four hits.
The Rams will continue play at home on Tuesday, Mar. 23 with a non-conference game against St. Edward's before traveling on the road to Texas A&M – Kingsville on Friday.
