LAREDO, Texas – The 10
th-ranked Angelo State women's soccer team earned a Lone Star Conference Divisional Championship as the Belles finished the regular season undefeated with a 5-0 win over Texas A&M International on Wednesday night.
The Belles will head into the LSC Tournament with a 7-0-0 record overall, going 5-0-0 in conference play while the Dustdevils finish the season at 3-3-1, 2-2-1 LSC.
Angelo State didn't wait long to take the lead against TAMIU as
Gabby Villagrand made a run into the box, collecting a pass from
Avery McNeme before scoring the first goal of the match in the 14
th minute of play.
"The first half was okay, I think we could have played a little better, our movement on the ball could have been better but in the second half I think our defense was a little smarter and the finishing was fantastic," said Head Coach
Travis McCorkle. "Gabby's opening goal was great, she anticipated the ball and it was a great pass from Avery. That really takes the pressure off of us getting that first goal."
Despite being down early, the Dustdevils kept up the fight, rattling off six shots in the first half with four landing on target.
Kira Miller started back in goal for the Belles, collecting six saves to earn her first shutout and the team's fifth of the season.
The Belles opened things up offensively in the second half, tallying 13 shots in the period to finish the match with 18 total, 14 shots on target.
Cindy Rodriguez scored her fourth goal of the season in the 50
th minute while
Valerie Solis scored moments later to give the Belles a 3-0 advantage.
"The second half we made some adjustments defensively and forced a lot more turnovers and that opened up some really nice plays," added McCorkle. Bianca made a run that opened up the field for another goal and Valeria gets the ball, notices the keeper is out and flicks it up over for the score, a very difficult shot.
ASU's offense didn't let up as McNeme scored her fourth goal of the season after collecting a pass from
Madison Stokes while
Madison Maxey scored for the second week in a row, taking a pass from McNeme who tallied her second assist of the game.
"Our bench continues to be a strength, we played everyone and we still held on to a shutout, a lot of really good things going on in that game today. "I hope this win gives us a lot of confidence heading into the conference tournament."
The Belles enter the LSC tournament with the top-rated defense in the league, allowing only two goals in seven matches. They will receive a first-round bye in the tournament and will host the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 game on Tuesday, April. 6 at the ASU Soccer Field.
