LUBBOCK, Texas – The top-ranked Angelo State baseball team fell just short of a series sweep against Lubbock Christian, falling in game three 12-6 on Sunday afternoon at Hay's Field.
The Rams move to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in Lone Star Conference play while the Chaps improve to 4-8, 3-6 in the LSC.
Lubbock Christian struck first in the final game of the three-game series, hitting a two-RBI single up the middle in the first inning to go up 2-0.
After a scoreless second inning by both squads, the Rams jumped ahead, scoring five runs in the third inning starting with an RBI single to second base by
Koby Kelton to score
Thomas Cain for ASU's first score. The Rams followed that up with a two-RBI single by
Parker Bramlett and a double by
Jordan Williams, scoring two more runs to give ASU a 5-2 advantage.
The lead wouldn't last long as the Chaps came up with a five-run inning in the fourth, capped off by a grand slam home run to left field to regain the lead 7-5. LCU added one run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning to extend its lead to 10-5.
Jesse Meyer took the loss for the Rams, his first of the season as he moved to a 2-1 overall record on the year. He tossed 5.2 innings of work with four earned runs off of 10 hits and struck out four batters.
ASU would add one final run in the ninth inning as
Josh Elvir singled to right field, scoring Cain for his second run of the game. Elvir led the Rams with three hits while Bramlett and Williams both finished with two hits and two RBIs.
The Rams will take next week off before returning to action at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium on Mar. 19 as Angelo State hosts Texas A&M International in a three-game series.
