SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 12th-ranked Angelo State women's tennis team notched its 12
th straight win as the Belles defeated UT Tyler 5-2 to finish Lone Star Conference undefeated, claiming their second straight regular-season championship.
The Belles improved to 14-3 overall and 9-0 in conference play to claim back-to-back titles. ASU will advance to the LSC postseason tournament as the No. 1-seed beginning Apr. 29 in Waco, Texas.
Angelo State won the first doubles match as
Zoe Gubbels and
Virginie Becht won their ninth straight match at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-4. After the Patriots tied things up with a win at No. 3,
Ena Ovcina and
Valentina Gonzalez clinched the point with a 7-5 victory.
In singles play, Becht made quick work of her opponent, winning 6-1, 6-0 while
Dianela Rodriguez won 6-2, 6-0 to give the Belles a 3-0 advantage.
Gubbels secured the win over the Patriots and the full share of the LSC regular-season title with a win at the No. 5 spot, closing out the dual with a 6-2, 7-5 win to give the Belles their fourth point. Also picking up a win was
Maria Delgadillo who bounced back from a 1-6 loss in the opening set to win 6-2, 7-5.
The Belles will open the LSC postseason tournament against eighth-seed Western New Mexico on Apr. 29 at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.
