San Antonio – The Angelo State soccer team dropped their conference opener this afternoon to St. Mary's (TX) by a score line of 2-1. With neither team scoring in the first 45 minutes of play, the scoring opened in the 64
th minute by the Rattlers off a goal kick.
It took the Belles ten minutes to respond, doing so through
Madison Maxey's first goal of the season, tapping in a squared ball from the left side courtesy of
Grace Jordan.
The Rattlers would take back the lead a mere six seconds later, scoring on a speculative effort from outside of the right corner of the Belles' penalty area following kickoff.
"We switched off after equalizing," said head coach
Travis McCorkle about the Rattlers' game-winner. "Our girl got cut 1v1 in that situation and it was a great bomb from her."
For the match, the Belles barely outshot the visitors 11-9 and only won three corner kicks, also fouling the Rattlers 11 times during the match.
"I want to see us defending better, we didn't do a good job of that," said McCorkle. "I want to see how we will respond to that in practice this week and on Saturday."
The loss snaps a 15-game regular season winning streak for the Belles, which started back on February 24
th of this year, the first game of their spring 2021 season.
The Belles are now 5-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Their conference home opener will be on Saturday when they host Eastern New Mexico at 1 p.m.
