No.3 Rams Defeat Western Oregon 30-7 on the Road

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The third-ranked Angelo State football team extended its winning streak on Saturday, defeating Western Oregon 30-7 on the road in Lone Star Conference play at McArthur Field.

The Rams improve to 5-0 for the first team since 2005 while extending the conference record to 3-0.

ASU collected 437 total yards of offense while holding the Wolves to 180 yards on the day including 53 yards rushing.

The Rams scored first on the day as Nate Omayebu III capped off a three-play, 53-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter.

After forcing a punt by the Wolves, Zach Bronkhorst threw a slant to Noah Massey who ran it for 73 yards to the WOU two-yard line. Kason Philips caught the touchdown pass before a missed PAT made it 13-0 in favor of the Rams.

The Wolves finally got their offense going in the second quarter, moving downfield before scoring on a 19-yard run to cut ASU's lead to six points.

With 3:33 to play in the first half, Omayebu got in the end zone once again, scoring from two yards out after Kel Williams set up the score with a 28-yard rush to make it 20-7 at the break. Omayebu finished the day with 83 rushing yards and two touchdowns, averaging 4.4 yards per carry.

ASU's defense held the Wolves to only 59 yards of offense in the first half, while the Rams totaled 248 yards of their own.

In the second half, the Wolves drove the ball into ASU territory on their first drive before turning the ball over on downs as Micah Flowers and K'hari Watson combined for a sack on fourth down.

The Rams found the endzone again as Bronkhorst connected with Philips on a wheel route for 82-yards for his second touchdown catch of the day as ASU extended the lead to 27-7.

Bronkhorst finished with 276 passing yards and two touchdowns while completing 14-of-24 pass attempts. Massey was the top receiver for ASU in yards with 87 on three catches while Philips finished with 84 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

The Rams added three more points with just over five minutes to play as Asa Fuller converted a 21-yard field goal attempt to make it 30-7.

ASU defense collected three interceptions and three sacks on the day as Eric Rascoe led the Rams with nine total tackles followed by Daron Allman and Andrew Pitts with six. Pitts also recorded his third straight game with an interception.

The Rams return home next weekend as they welcome in Eastern New Mexico in LSC action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.
