Belles Down LCU in Five Sets

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State volleyball team held out for a five-set victory over Lubbock Christian on Friday night, defeating the Chaps 3-2 (25-20, 10-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10) at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
 
The Belles improve to 10-9 overall on the season and 6-1 in Lone Star Conference action.
 
Both teams traded off points in the first set, working to a 10-10 tie. The Belles used an 8-2 run to pull away late in the set, taking a 21-16 advantage. LCU came within four points of the lead before a kill by Sydney Mundkowsky closed out the first set 25-20.
 
The Chaps answered back in set two, starting off with a 7-0 run for the early advantage. LCU continued to string points together, going up by 10, 16-6, before finishing the set 25-10, tying the match at 1-1 in sets.
 
ASU hit .213 on the night, collecting 64 kills while Kayla Baer and Laney Dale finished with 31 and 25 assists respectively.
 
In the third set, the Belles jumped out to a 5-2 lead after a kill by Mundkowsky. She finished with a match-high 24 kills while hitting a .417 clip on the night.
 
ASU continued to string points together as they held off the Chaps to win the third set 25-19.
 
Down 22-16 late in the fourth set, the Belles nearly came back to win the set, using a 7-2 to come within one point but couldn't close out as LCU forced a fifth set.
 
Kaila Garnett added 13 kills for the Belles while Sam Rogers and Cate Boldrick each finished with eight. Caleigh Enax led the Belles in digs, collected 24 on the night followed by 16 from Hannah Kinnison.
 
The Belles came out quickly in the fifth set, scoring three straight points before a run by the Chaps tied things up 7-7. ASU scored five straight points to pull away before finishing the match with a kill from Mundkowsky.
 
ASU is back at home tomorrow afternoon as the Belles welcome in Eastern New Mexico beginning at 2 p.m.
