SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team returned to their home court and promptly returned to winning ways, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville 72-58 behind a hot-shooting second quarter and solid defense from the Rambelles.
The Rambelles redeem their loss to the Javelinas back on December 4
th, with the Javelinas claiming a 61-43 win on their home court on that occasion.
A defense-heavy first quarter saw both teams combined for only 19 points through the opening ten minutes of play, with the Rambelles holding a 10-9 lead.
The Rambelles would go on an 18-8 run in the final 8:06 of the period to extend their lead from two to 12 points heading into the break. The Rambelles would shoot 8-of-13 during that stretch, with six consecutive makes from the 6:15 mark to the 2:56 mark in the quarter.
For the quarter, the Rambelles shot 66.7 percent from the field to score 24 points, also going 3-of-5 from three in the frame. The hosts held a 34-22 halftime lead over the Javelinas.
The Rambelles would extend their lead in the second half, leading by as much as 24 in the fourth quarter; the Javelinas would pull back some of that lead, whittling it down to as little as 13 but couldn't get any closer.
Sawyer Lloyd led all players with a game-high 18 points. The Wall native assisted a game-best six times and grabbed five steals on the defensive end. For the game, the Rambelles forced 24 Javelina turnovers.
Blakely Gerber scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor in only 15 minutes of action, while fellow Wayland Baptist transfers
Payton Brown and
Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant scored 10 points apiece.
McGhee-Pleasant stuffed the stat sheet on the night, falling just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. On the defensive end, she matched her season-high with six steals.
Madeline Stephens grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds while
Ashlynn Sharp added eight points off the bench, making a pair of threes.
The Rambelles improve to 10-11 on the season and are 7-3 in conference play. They return to the floor on Saturday to host Texas A&M International, who are coming off a loss tonight in Odessa to UT Permian Basin.
