Rams Take Two From UAFS as They Sweep Friday's Doubleheader

FORT SMITH, Ark. – The fifth-ranked Angelo State baseball team got off to a strong start in the Lone Star Conference series against UAFS as the Rams swept Friday's doubleheader against the Lions at Crowder Field.
 
The Rams have won three games in a row as they improve to 4-2 overall and 4-2 in the Lone Star while the Lions move to 2-4, 2-4 LSC.
 
GAME ONE: ASU 6, UAFS 2
Aaron Munson started on the mound for the Rams in game one of the series, picking up his first win of the season as he improves to 1-1. He tossed five innings of work while allowing only three hits with two runs and three strikeouts.
 
The Rams scored early as Jordan Williams grounded out to second base to score Jackson Hardy for the first run to start the game.
 
Reese Johnson added to the Rams' lead in the top of the fourth inning, hitting a two-run homer to right field for his first home run of the season as the Rams went up 3-0. Johnson got it done at the plate again in the sixth hitting, scoring two more runs with a double while Austin Beck came around to score on a throwing error on the same play.
 
Also pitching in relief was Jackson Haga who threw one inning with one hit while Jack Brinley forced three groundouts to close out the game in his inning on the mound.;
 
GAME TWO: ASU 6, UAFS 5
The Lions got the jump in game two, tallying two runs in the first inning off a sac-fly and a throwing error.
 
ASU got one run back in the second off an RBI single by Beck to score Tripp Clark while Aaron Walters hit a solo shot to right-center to tie the game.
 
Down 3-2 in the fifth, Walters tied the game again with a sac-fly to right field before the Lions found a way to answer back in the bottom of the inning, putting up two more runs.
 
The Rams finally took control in the sixth inning, scoring three runs beginning with a two-RBI single by Johnson before stealing second allowed Kamden Kelton to score on the throw.
 
Jake Rogers earned the win to improve to 2-0 while Carson Childers picked up his first save of the season. Childers allowed two hits a walk with no runs and two strikeouts through two innings.
 
Johnson combined for 4-of-7 from the plate in both games while tallying six RBIs and adding a run scored to lead ASU offensively.
 
The Rams continue the series against the Lions tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
