PORTALES, N.M. – The 12
th-ranked Angelo State baseball team took a three-game lead in the series against Eastern New Mexico, sweeping the doubleheader on Friday at the Greyhound Baseball Field.
Winning their fourth game in a row, the Rams improve to 31-10 overall and 29-10 in the Lone Star Conference.
GAME 1: ASU 18, ENMU 5
The Rams did a majority of their damage in the first inning of game one, scoring 10 runs to take over early. The Rams led the inning off with three straight singles before a fielding error brought in the first two runs.
Tyler Boggs hit a two-RBI double to center field while
Aaron Walters and
Justin Lee both brought in two RBIs on singles for their second hits of the inning.
ASU added another run in the second and another in the third as the Rams go up 12-0. After loading the bases in the fourth, Walters was hit by a pitch to score
Justin Harris.
The Greyhounds scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning and added another run in the fourth and the fifth innings.
Jake Rogers started on the mound for ASU, earning his eighth win of the season. Rogers finished with 10 hits and five runs through 6 2/3 innings, striking out six batters.
The Rams capped off the game with three runs in the seventh as Boggs and Beck hit RBI doubles followed by a single to
Jackson Hardy for the final run.
GAME 2: ASU 8, ENMU 1
The Rams scored first in game two, tallying three runs in the first inning. Beck came around on a wild pitch followed by hits from
Jordan Williams and
Tayten Tredaway to go up 3-0.
In the second inning, Lee tripled to center field, scoring Walters and Harris to extend ASU's lead. The Rams added a run in the third inning off a sac-fly by Harris while Walters doubled in the fifth to score
Koby Kelton.
Aaron Munson was the starting pitcher for the Rams, throwing four innings in no runs off four hits. He also finished with four strikeouts and a walk as he improved to 6-2 overall.
ENMU scored their first run in the game in the sixth inning, hitting a double to right field but the Rams quickly got the run back in the next inning as Harris hit a sac bunt to score
Thomas Cain, making it 8-1.
Price Siemering closed out the game for ASU, throwing three innings with six hits and one earned run. He totaled five strikeouts as he picked up his first save of the season.
The Rams and Greyhounds will close out the series tomorrow with game four scheduled for 2 p.m. CST.
