SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's tennis team suffered their first loss at home in nearly three seasons this afternoon, losing to the nation's sixth-ranked team, Central Oklahoma, 6-1.
The loss breaks an 11-match winning streak that started on February 29
th, 2020. The Belles' last loss at home came on May 13
th, 2019, against St. Edward's in the South Central Regional.
The Bronchos clinched the doubles point with 6-0 wins at lines one and three;
Ramitha Irrinki and
Ayda Guler forced 48
th-ranked Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyer into a tiebreaker at line two, with the ranked pairing taking the tiebreaker.
Third-ranked Mae Canate and 25
th-ranked Adel Abidullina of UCO took lines one and two in straight sets, extending the visitors' lead to 3-0.
Despite the deficit, all four remaining singles matches favored the Belles at some point;
Eva Schwartz and
Alexandra Vishnevskaya took the opening set at lines three and six, while
Ramitha Irrinki came back from dropping her first set to win set two.
Ayda Guler won her match at line four in straight sets for the lone Belles point on the afternoon.
The Belles are now 14-6 overall and are back in action next weekend, facing Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road Thursday before hosting Western New Mexico on Saturday in their regular-season finale.
