LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The 25th-ranked Angelo State women's soccer team earned its first win and seventh straight opening day victory after defeating Colorado Christian 3-0 Thursday afternoon.
"It was a dream start in the first half," said Head Coach
Travis McCorkle.
Grace Jordan opened the Belles' season account, scoring the first goal just nine minutes into the contest. It took just 15 minutes for the Belles to put another one past the keeper, as Jordan slid a ball into the box that was finished by
Reagan Urbany for her first goal of the season.
A cross from
Libby Welker found its way to
Madison Stokes who rounded out the scoring for the Belles. This was Stokes' second consecutive season scoring against the Cougars.
A stifling defensive effort, with help from two new starters in
Natasha Soto and
Harper Saxon, helped the Belles to victory as Colorado Christian was only able to get off six shots with two on goal. "I thought Tasha and Harper played really well in their first starts", McCorkle said.
Kira Miller earned her first clean sheet of the season and 29
th of her career. Miller is the all-time ASU record holder in that department and is chasing the Lone Star Conference career record of 40.
The Belles travel to Pueblo, Colo. for their next matchup, facing CSU-Pueblo Sunday, Aug. 28
th at 1 p.m. CST.
