Offensive Struggles Haunt Rambelles in Loss to Patriots

SAN ANGELO, Texas – After leading for the majority of the first half, the Angelo State women's basketball team went cold offensively in the second half and were bested by UT Tyler 62-51 at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena Saturday afternoon.
 
 
The Rambelles fall to 21-6 on the season and are now 16-5 in Lone Star Conference play with one conference contest remaining. The Patriots improve to 22-5 on the year and are 17-3 in conference action.
 
 
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
  • Sawyer Lloyd picked up where she left off last time out with a triple to give the Rambelles a 6-5 lead over the visiting Patriots with over seven minutes remaining in the first.
  • Madeline Stephens and Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant each scored three points as the Rambelles pulled ahead by three, 17-14 late in the first.
  • Lloyd made a pair of free throws to finish out the quarter, Rambelles still leading by three, 19-16.
  • McGhee-Pleasant, Lloyd, and Madisen Honea all scored as the Rambelles got started quick in the second quarter, jumping ahead by nine, 27-18.
  • A Lloyd free throw was the only point the Rambelles scored in the last 4:34 of the quarter as the offense stuttered, letting the Patriots back into the contest, Rambelles still leading 28-25 at the half.
  • The Rambelles kept the Patriots at bay for the first few minutes as Stephens made a layup to keep the lead at two, 33-31 with 7:17 to go in the third.
  • The Blue and Gold offense once more went ice cold, scoring only two points in the last seven minutes as the Rambelles now trailed 41-35 heading into the fourth.
  • The visitors continued to pile it on to start the fourth, pulling ahead by 13, 50-37 with 6:22 remaining.
  • Lloyd and Stephens were crucial as the Rambelles pulled within six, 55-49 as the clock ticked under a minute, with 50 seconds remaining.
  • The Lady Patriots were able to hit free throws down the stretch, keeping the Rambelles at bay, taking a 62-51 victory over the hosts.
 
 
GAME STATS
  • Lloyd led the way for the Blue and Gold with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
  • McGhee-Pleasant was the only other Rambelle in double figures as she fouled out after scoring 13 points and pulling in nine rebounds.
  • Stephens also flirted with another double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.
  • The Rambelles were limited to just 25 percent shooting from the field, their worst shooting performance of the season.
  • The Rambelles held a slight rebounding advantage 41-40 over the Lady Patriots as the teams each turned the ball over 16 times.
 
 
NEXT UP
The Rambelles wrap up the regular season at home next Thursday squaring off with UT Permian Basin at 5:30 p.m. before the LSC tournament kicks off in Frisco on March 2nd at the Comerica Center.
