No. 18 Rambelles Drop First Two Games

Conroe, Texas – The Angelo State softball team scored 12 runs in two games but ultimately dropped their first two games of the 2023 season, losing to No. 8 Central Oklahoma 13-9 before turning around and dropping their game to Arkansas Tech 7-3.

Ashlyn Lerma drew a four-pitch walk in the first inning of game one against the Bronchos before Paxton Scheurer homered to left field on the first pitch she saw this season to give the Rambelles an early 2-0 lead; however, the Bronchos responded with four runs on three home runs to secure a 4-2 lead.

Madison Fernandez singled in Lerma in the third inning to pull a run back for the Rambelles, and she would single again in the fifth to drive in another run.

The next batter, Lindsey Evans, hit a three-run home run to give the Rambelles the lead; Bailey Martinez would score on a wild pitch later in the inning to expand the lead to 8-5.

The Bronchos would record three extra-base hits and two home runs in the bottom half of the inning as they scored eight runs to retake a 13-8 lead from the Rambelles.

Angelo State would conjure up a two-out rally in the seventh inning, scoring a run, loading the bases, and having the tying run at the plate; however, the rally fell short for the Rambelles.

Game two saw the Golden Suns score the first six runs of the contest through the first four and a half innings of action.

Layni Tanner would single in the fifth inning to record the first RBI of her collegiate career, while Keilei Garcia and Scheurer would hit solo home runs in the sixth and seventh inning, respectively, to account for the Rambelles' runs.

The leading hitters for the Rambelles in their two games were Scheurer, Lerma and Tanner. Scheurer went 4-for-7 with two home runs and three RBIs, while Lerma went 3-for-7.

In her first two collegiate games, Tanner went 3-for-8 with an RBI.

The Rambelles are back in action tomorrow at 3:30 and 5:45, taking on Regis and Cal Poly Humboldt.
