SAN ANGELO, Texas – The top-ranked Angelo State baseball team claimed the 2023 Lone Star Conference Regular Season Championship after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader against No. 8 St. Edward's, winning 9-6 and 7-1 at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The Rams improve their overall record to 39-6 overall and 37-6 in LSC play while claiming their second straight LSC regular season title.
GAME ONE: ASU 9, SEU 6
After a scoreless first inning, the Rams struck in the bottom of the second as
Austin Beck scored on a wild pitch before
Kamden Kelton brought in
Justin Harris on an RBI double.
The Rams added three more runs in the third with a couple of doubles as
Tayten Tredaway brought in two on a hit down the right field line followed by a shot from Harris down the left field line to give the Rams a 5-0 advantage.
After an hour and a half lightning delay, play resumed in the bottom of the fourth inning as ASU extended its lead as
Tripp Clark grounded out to score Kelton. Beck added two more for the Rams on a triple to right field before coming around to score on a wild pitch for the second time.
Braxton Pearson started the game for the Rams, throwing four innings with only one hit and five strikeouts before the delay ended his outing. He earned the win, improving to 6-1 overall on the year.
The Hilltoppers tallied their first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, hitting an RBI single to center field. SEU tried to make a comeback in the seventh, scoring five runs but fell short.
Hunter Mayo earned his first save of the season, throwing three innings with six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO: ASU 7, SEU 1
The Rams took an early lead in game two, scoring four runs in the second inning. Tredaway came around to score from second base on an error before another error brought home
Tyler Boggs while
Jacob Guerrero and Beck both forced bases-loaded walks.
In the third inning, Kelton laid down a sac bunt to score Harris and give the Rams a 5-0 lead.
Jackson Berry picked up the win, tossing a complete seven-inning game with only five hits and one run while striking out seven batters.
The Hilltoppers scored their only run of the game in the fourth, hitting a single down the right field line.
ASU collected two more runs in the sixth as
Reese Johnson brought in Boggs on a sac bunt before Guerrero singled to score Cain.
The Rams and Hilltoppers will finish off the season Sunday afternoon with game four scheduled for 1 p.m.
