SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Angelo State women's soccer team battled their way to a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon, claiming their first win in the conference schedule.
Â
The Rambelles improve to 2-5-1 on the season and are now 1-1-0 in Lone Star Conference action. Midwestern State falls to 4-2-2 on the season and 1-1-0 in LSC action.
Â
In what was a similar contest to the Belle's previous match against Fort Lewis, the team came out firing. With five shots in the first half compared to the Mustangs one. Shots by
Mariah Griffin,
Abby James,
Allyson Reed, and
Grace Jordan were all blocked until
Sanai Stewart was able to get one on target, forcing a save from the Mustangs keeper.
Â
In the second half, it was more of the same thing; with the Belles's speed in the front three pressuring the backline of the Mustangs all day long until, in the 89th minute, Griffin broke free on the left wing running into the box, passing it across to
Brianna Rodriguez where she got behind the defense and tapped in the game-winning goal.
Â
The Bells outshot the Mustangs 13 to five.
Â
Amber Lockwood was able to record her second clean sheet as a Rambelle facing very little pressure from the Mustangs offense.
From Head Coach Travis McCorkle: " I think there was some moments that we played some great soccer, we were trying to do stuff a little bit different today. I thought it had mix results, but it caused more problems for Midwestern I thought. They made some good adjustments in the second half. They were all over us at the beginning, but we found a way to push through that pressure with the speed that our players had. Obviously, the goal by Brianna was an result of that speed getting in behind and causing problems. I am happy about that. I think defensively we still have room to grow. I hope we take this and continue to progress and do better".
