PORTALES, N.M. – The 20
th-ranked Angelo State football team tallied its second win in a row as the Rams defeated Eastern New Mexico 23-14 on the road Saturday night at Greyhound Stadium.
With the win, the Rams improve to 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Greyhounds struck first, taking the opening drive of the game 75 yards for a touchdown, scoring on a 22-yard pass for the early lead.
ASU's offense cut into the lead in its first drive, moving the ball 61 yards before
Bradley Larson converted a 20-yard field goal.
After forcing the Greyhounds to punt, the Rams tallied their first touchdown of the game as
Chad Pharies took the snap before running the ball in from four yards out to give ASU its first lead of the game.
ENMU continued to find success moving the ball, taking another drive 75 yards before scoring on a one-yard rush to make it 14-10 midway through the second quarter.
The Rams finished with 321 yards of total offense with 207 yards coming on the ground.
Brayden Wilcox led the running attack for the Rams with a game-high 147 yards rushing on 23 carries.
Defensively, ASU held the Greyhounds to 262 yards offensively, including 73 yards through the air, as
Amieh Williams led the Rams with a season-high nine tackles while
K'hari Watson and
Eric Rascoe finished the game with eight.
Near the end of the third quarter, the Rams regained the lead as
Gerald Gardner tossed a 14-yard pass to
Kel Williams who lost the ball in the endzone before
Donny Bishop recovered the ball for a touchdown.
Gardner and Williams combined for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, this time a four-yard pass for the final score of the game.
ASU did not allow a point in the last 44 minutes of the game, forcing two missed field goals and four punts on the day.
The Rams will have next weekend off due to the bye week before returning to action on Oct. 14 at Texas A&M – Kingsville.
