Belles Win 10th Straight on Buzzer Beater from Stephens

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball came from behind to defeat Eastern New Mexico, 61-59, as Madeline Stephens hit the game-winner at the buzzer on Saturday at the Junell Center – Stephens Arena.
 
The Belles have won 10 consecutive games, improving their record to 12-3 overall and 8-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
 
Trailing by 12 points with seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Belles scored eight straight points with threes by Addy Burns and Majik Esquivel and a layup from Keniah Williams to make it a five-point game.
 
After trading back and forth, the Belles tied the game on a jumper by Landry Morrow before taking their first lead of the game on a free throw by Burns with 39 seconds to play.
 
Trailing by three with nine seconds to play, the Greyhounds hit a three to tie the game.
 
With 2.7 seconds to go in the game, Stephens took the inbound pass before driving to the basket for the game-winning layup to extend ASU's win streak to double digits.
 
Stephens finished with a game-high 16 points while Williams finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Esquivel and Burns both added 10 points in the game.
 
The Belles finished with 18 points off turnovers and 17 second-chance points while shooting 34.8 percent on the day.
 
Eastern New Mexico led by as much as 20-4 after the first quarter before the Belles outscored the Greyhounds in the final three quarters.
 
The Belles are back home next week as they welcome in Midwestern State on Thursday, Jan. 16 before facing Lubbock Christian on Saturday.
