No. 11 Rambelles Host George and Ola McCorkle Challenge

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State softball team opens its home schedule this weekend when it hosts the ASU George and Ola McCorkle Challenge Presented by West Texas Steel from Friday through Sunday at Mayer Field. 

Joining the Rambelles in San Angelo this weekend is Missouri Western, Ouachita Baptist, and Texas A&M International. 

LAST TIME OUT
The nation's 11th-ranked team started off the 2025 season with a 5-0 weekend at the DII First Pitch Invitational in Conroe, claiming wins over Regis, RV Pittsburg State, No. 21 Colorado Mesa, Colorado School of Mines, and Southeastern Oklahoma. The weekend saw the Rambelles only allow two runs across 31 innings. 

APPLIN NAMED NFCA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore shortstop Laylonna Applin was named the NFCA/Louisville Slugger Division II Player of the Week for her huge weekend in Conroe. Applin batted .667 and slugged 1.733 as eight of her ten hits went for extra bases. She drove 14 runs and led Division II in RBI through the opening weekend. Applin is the first Rambelle named national player of the week since Paxton Scheurer in March 2022. 

FLOYD NO-NO
Senior right-hander Cheyenne Floyd opened the 2025 season with the program's first no-hitter since 2017 in the Rambelles' 8-0 run-rule win over Regis. Floyd, the LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, recorded 13 of her 15 outs via strikeout and carried a perfect game into the fifth inning. Floyd carries a 1.00 ERA and a 3-0 record with 24 strikeouts in 14 innings as opponents hit .128 against the senior. 

SCOTT CLOSES IN ON 1K CAREER WINS
Head coach Travis Scott is closing in on 1,000 career wins. He currently sits on 977 career wins. He is seventh among all Division II coaches in wins, 23rd among all coaches across all three divisions, and 14th in winning percentage. He won his first 101 games at Southeastern Oklahoma before winning the next 876 wins at the helm of the Rambelles softball program. 

RAMBELLES RANKS
The Rambelles rank among the nation's best in multiple categories. They are third in Division II in team ERA (0.45), fifth in hit-by-pitches (seven), second in shutouts (three), and fifth in strikeouts per seven innings (9.26). Laylonna Applin leads Division II in RBI, is second in home runs (three), and fourth in slugging percentage (1.733). Cheyenne Floyd is seventh in the country in strikeouts (24), and Amelia Hatthorn is among 44 qualified pitchers with a 0.00 ERA.

NEED TO KNOW
  • Angelo State is 5-0 this season after going undefeated at the DII First Pitch Invitational. 
  • The Rambelles hit .339 as a team with a .545 slugging and .427 on-base percentage. The Rambelles average seven runs per game. 
  • Six Rambelles are hitting above .300 this season, led by Laylonna Applin's .667 batting average. Applin also leads the team in doubles, triples, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. 
  • Ashton McMillan is hitting .500, followed by Tatiana Trotter's .364 average and Averie Gunther's .357 mark. 
  • The Rambelles' pitching staff has a 0.45 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 31 innings. They have only allowed 22 hits, and their opponent's batting average is .198. 
  • Cheyenne Floyd is 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 14 innings. Opponents are hitting .128 against Floyd this season.
  • Amelia Hatthorn is 2-0 and has not allowed a run or walked a batter this season. She has ten strikeouts in nine innings after the opening weekend. 
  • Bri Waters, Raegan Sucher, and Matie Wolkow have not allowed a run in eight innings in relief, striking out seven batters. 

MISSOURI WESTERN
2025 RECORD: 1-4
  • Missouri Western opened its season with a 1-4 record, winning 13-8 over Midwestern State while dropping games against St. Edward's, Texas A&M International, Texas Woman's, and UT Tyler. The first three losses came in one-run contests. 
  • The Griffons are led by Nicole Thompson, who is in her first season at MWSU. She joins the Griffons from Regis, where she led the Rangers to an RMAC Tournament Championship and a win over No. 1 West Texas A&M at the South Central Regional. 
  • The Griffons are hitting .242 with a .305 slugging percentage and a .342 on-base percentage, and they are averaging 4.5 runs per game. 
  • Regis transfer Sienna Reed leads the team with a .429 batting average; she and Mackenzie DeVine are hitting above .300 on the season. 
  • The Griffons' pitchers have a 3.86 team ERA and have struck out 21 batters in 32.2 innings; opponents are hitting .258 against the Griffons this season. 
  • Sydney Rader has a 2.86 ERA, and Harley Pruetting has a 1-1 record and 13 strikeouts in 14.1 innings. 
  • This will be the first-ever matchup between the Griffons and the Rambelles.

OUACHITA BAPTIST
2025 RECORD: 3-1
  • Ouachita Baptist is 3-1 on the season with wins over Missouri S&T, Northwest Missouri, and Northeastern State; their lone loss came against Christian Brothers. 
  • The Tigers are hitting .319 with a .469 slugging percentage and .371 on-base percentage, and they average 5.5 runs per game. 
  • Three Tigers hit above .300, led by Emily Reed's .600 mark. Reed has driven in a team-high four runs. 
  • Tigers pitchers have a 3.25 ERA this season and have struck out 11 batters in 28 innings; opponents are hitting .313 against the Tigers. 
  • Catie Amador leads the team with a 2.03 ERA, while Tuesday Melton has a 2.10 ERA. 
  • The Rambelles are 3-0 all-time against the Tigers, winning twice at the McCorkle in 2020. 

TEXAS A&M INTERNATIONAL
2025 RECORD: 5-1
  • Texas A&M International is 5-1 this season following their opening weekend at the DII First Pitch Invitational in Conroe, where they beat Colorado Mines, St. Martin's, Missouri Western, Regis, and Colorado Mesa. Their lone loss came against Southeastern Oklahoma, 2-1. 
  • The Dustdevils are hitting .288 on the season with a .325 slugging and .364 on-base percentage; they average four runs per game. 
  • Kennedy Griego is one of four Dustdevils to hit above .300, leading the team with a .389 average. Griego has drawn a team-high five walks.
  • Victoria Gonzalez is hitting .368 and has driven in a team-high seven runs. 
  • The Dustdevil pitching staff owns a 1.83 team ERA and has struck out 15 batters in 42 innings; opponents hit .237 against the Dustdevils.
  • Zakayia Fredrick leads the team with a 0.48 ERA and a 2-0 record, while Kylie Goad has a 1.27 ERA and Nevaeh Herrera has a 1.68 ERA. 
  • The Rambelles are 66-7 against Texas A&M International; last season, the Rambelles went 4-1 against the Dustdevils, with all five games taking place in San Angelo. The lone win for the Dustdevils was a 2-0 win on April 9th, where Goad pitched a two-hit shutout.
